worst piece of junk i've ever owned
Worst piece of junk I've ever owned. My daughter, son and sister purchased their MacgicJack the sand time I did... 10/08. Each of them has thrown the unit in the trash and went back to Vonage. I hung on until 06/09. MagicJack has tried repeatedly to make the unit work, Spent hours on the phone. They stalled me for over 30 days so the money back guarantee would expire. Now they say, "Sorry".

It works fine for me, with 2 MAJOR exceptions...
#1 - "all lines are currently busy" ... this means you cant call out, and nobody can reach you (not even your voicemail) if you are trying to call during peak hours.
#2 - No customer service? When I click the link for Live Chat on their site it redirects me to their FAQ page... ? No telephone number to reach them and no address either...
Besides that, the service is pretty good. I guess you get what you pay for in this world...

I disagree; the online service rep was very nice and gave the proper directions to get the device to work. I had issues setting MagicJack up because I didn’t follow the rom update posting. Now it works great, never had a busy line and used it at multiple locations on different network’s and PC`s. It set sup without a flaw. I will never pay a phone bill again.
If you want my opinion, get one. If u use an Internet PC at home and you live alone or with room mates. There is no reason what so ever not to own one. 20$ a year with on physical attachment, its a no-brainer. Think about it, there is no dough in my mind, this is the evolution of lan line telecommunications.
I never experienced the lines being busy but I did experience it with Vonage at 20$ + tx monthly and a yearly subscription to get the hardware for free. There where also activation fees. The router was a nice touch to Vonage but they also had the usb key.
The key was a nice feature to Vonage but adding 60$ + Tx for the hardware and a 20$ monthly bill didn’t compete with MagicJack.
MagicJack's 50$ funny looking usb device includes, a local 514 phone number, unlimited long distance US and Canada calls, Voice mail, call waiting, caller ID, and voice mail sent to my email address, a web interface for all my user options and one year of service. 12 months later just pay 20$ for 12 months year.

bad product, incoming calls
Well i saw on this blog that some people believe we are just irrate people who dont like magicjack. But i have to say i tried to give magicjack the benefit of the doubt. I bought it over 5 months ago and continue to have problems receving calls. If you are on the computer when someone tries to call, then the mj screen takes about 30 seconds to come up, while the phone rings non stop without stopping. About the time it start ringing intermittently, the mj has already sent them to voicemail and i have to call them back. This continue to occur all the time . I have tried go online for help and the technician has tried numerous things that dont work, and i still have the problem. I tried to update the mj but it still dont do anygood. I am afraid to give anybody my number since it is becoming a hassle to keep calling someone back. I am going to try that new company that mj hates because evidently it works well. Dont buy magicjack cause you will have a headache and they dont have a phone number for customer service which means they have something to hide. Mj is reaping what it is sowing it will be bankrupt by next year!

Just got disconnected from magicjack acct. for overusing the service which is either an error or a fraudulent attempt at profit. We use the acct. about once a day with some days making no more than 4 or 5 calls...but the average over the year is about one call per day. Numerous attempts to gain further information with Magicjack chat function were useless and they would not explain further what exact breach of terms was violated.
So what is the "new service that MJ hates" ?

Whenever I open my computer, anticipating the gorgeous picture I put on my destop, I am assaulted with a big Magic Jack ad immediately! Not one of my other many programs has the audacity to perform this extremely rude behavior.
And it won't go away! I can't see any other window because this ad is right on top, in the middle. Uggghhh!
When I contacted MJ, I got a very arrogant not-so-custumer-service-rep who asked if I read the TOS on this. Wasn't she surprised when I said, "yes" and could you show me where it described this rude behavior? Because I would not have accepted this.
Later, after she pretended to escalate me to another rep (herself) she admitted the lie. It is not mentioned anywhere in the TOS.
I give this company a very low score on the integrity scale.

I have been trying to connect with someone on the phone to see about the prices and options that are available through magic jack and so far the same person answers all
of the options offered on the phone, you never get to talk with someone and I have always been told the person I am wanting to talk with is not available.I have never asked to speak to one particular person, so I don't think this is for us.

Magic Jack has set themselves up for a 911 debacle. The phone# I have is actively registered to a company in Albuquerque. If either of us dials 911 the call will be misrouted to emergency operators. Over the last several days I have attempted to explain to managers at MagicJack that I cannot access voicemail and people cannot call me...I can only make calls. The reason for this is obvious...TWO PEOPLE SHARE THE SAME PHONE NUMBER. In order to give the readers of this complaint both sides of the story I have copied their response from a chat log. The customer service agent is "Irene":
Irene: As a manager I know that this is my responsibility to straighten things out. You have been promised by previous agents that this will be taken care of but still nothing has been resolved yet. Rest assured that this time this will be fixed. I will follow up this matter every now and then so that I can be sure that this will be taken care of. I know how you feel right now. I understand that the situation disappoints and frustrates you. We will work on this so that this issue will be fixed as fast as possible.
After waiting several days I still do not have access to voice mail and I cannot receive calls. I don't think I will ever be able to receive calls because the MJ # assigned to me is also active for a business in Albuquerque. I have spent approximately 12 hours with chat sessions and doing "upgrades" and disconnecting the device, rebooting etc. THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT WORK. I am not the only person who has been assigned an active number belonging to another person. Please read the trailing complaints on this website.

misleading claims
If you don't get the telrphone number you want when you sign up you fan forget ever getting it. I bought 5 years of service over 2 years ago because they promised I would be able to port my existing phone munber over shortly. Check and see what they are still saying about number portability today. As for their online service, forget it. Once when I contacted them on their ridiculus online Chat service about progress toward the above my Magic Jack was still working. However, they still told me I needed to install an update. I did as they requested and as a result the USB port I had my Magic Jack plugged into quit working altogether. When I asked how to fix it I was told to "REFORMAT MY HARD DRIVE". When I told them they had to be kidding they ceased responding to me. No way would I trust these people with anything that my life might depend on. They are all SELL and no service. Buyer beware!

When I purchased this a year ago, it worked off and on for a short time. Often, people on the other end could not hear me and quite often I would have to reboot computer to get it to give me a dial tone. When the service cut out with the little sad face for renewal, I got online to renew, only to be met with some customer service reps from India (judging from their poor grammar and syntax) who said that my "case" was being reviewed and to be patient. I has been more than a month and still nothing. I have had no less than five online chats with these people and probably should file a lawsuit just to make them live up to their agreements.
Pitiful product. Stay away.

selling your email address
I created an special email exclusively for use with my magic jack account, and now I am getting spam email from other companies.
My only conclusion is that Magic Jack sold my email address.
This special email address is a special "Address Guard" feature of my paid Yahoo email account, so it is not subject to spam or advertisement; so the only way I could have gotten spam was from Magic Jack selling my email address.

wrong phone number
I wanted to use my existing phone number but the system of magic jack did not provide for that selection..they gave me a phone number i did not want and I am very upset. in addition there is no way to contact them to resolve this matter. please help me thank you

Well let me tell you! that when I order this MagicJack, I only order One and got charge the normal amount $46.90, later on the same week I got charge again $39.95 (I say why?) I try calling and I was on hold for 56 minutes with the same recording OVER and OVER again. I say to my self! Let me try the Web site and see how this is handle...Ho boy what did I got my self in to! trying to Chat with customer Service Man that first of all it took forever the customer Service to reply, on top of that they Keep asking me the same question over and Over again ( what is you order #? did you received the Item) To make a long story Short I DONT RECOMEND THIS.
I'm returning these items to MagicJack and am going to take 3 to 6 weeks for me to get my return!

not available in 775 area code
Everything about the Magic Jack sounds so good but what they fail to tell you is that is is not available within all area codes. For instance, in Nevada you can only use Magic Jack if you are in Las Vegas (702 area code).
It is not available for the 775 area code and no one can tell you when this area code will be added.

I just purchased this in Reno, as well, and not only was I mad that they were unable to tell me when the (775) area code will become available, I am also mad that the business where I puchased this product couldn't give me the heads up that I wouldn't be able to make a phone cal without charging my friends and family! I repeatedly asked the online customer service person to give me an "educated guess" as to when the (775) area will become available, and she kept telling me " it will be available when it becomes available" What the @#^?!? Now, when I go back to the retailer and try to return it, I better get my money back! I can't tell you if this is a good product or not because I never even got the chance to use it! Thanks a lot MagicJack! Better not 'magicJACK' me outta $40!

If I had done my due dilligence, which is apparently what you have to do with everything now a days, I would have at
least used a gift card.
In any case, how can I possibly recommend a company or product that has this kind of track record! No way! do not ever, under any circumstance, give them your atm card number, credit card number, or your bank account number. i can not understand how this company is still being allowed to rip people off. Isn't there someone out there that can do something to stop this company? and if not, why not?

When they first came out with the Magic Jack they did the same to me. They told me it was a trial for 30 days and I would not get billed until after the 30 days. They lied! They not only billed me but billed me fr a lot more than they told me it would cost! I too went in the red with my checking account! So many of my checks bounced I had to close my account eventually. Even the bank couldn't figure it out it was so messed up. Every Time I see a commercial for them it burns me up! What a scam! When I called customer service I was told they had no supervisors available! Lots of BS!

Why waste your time with MJ support. I don't know where you got your MJ from, but here is what I would have done if I couldn't get a new number from tech support. I would go to the nearest Walgreens, CVS, or Best Buy and buy a new MagicJack. I would then register that new MJ which would give you a new number. Then I would repack the old MJ in the package I just bought and return it to the store for a full refund, stating that it didn't work on my computer. This way I would have a working MJ with a new number and no added cost (except for the trip to the store to buy then return the MJ).
area codes
They do not tell you that some area codes are not available for your phone number. I ended up having to choose a phone number in a different area code so persons who call me have to pay for long distance.

I too live around Kanasas City, KS and the only area code MajicJack offers isn't for Kanasa city or this area code area with no help from MajicJack. This has turned out to be a wothless product for someone that needs to be in a curton area code and can not get a number thru MaijicJack (crap). I bought my MajicJack at WalMart. My mistake, but not again. Buyer beware.

i got my majicjack a year now . In December 2009 an alert notice appeared informing me my licence is about to expire . i made an attempt to renew the licence following all the steps as instructed via their wed site and had no sucess .i contacted them through the chat online that is made available on three occasions and i was told tha they are reviewing may account . the same answer i got every time i made contact, they keep sending me to some higher support level and at the end they say someone will contact me via my email. Today is January o6 /2010 i no one has contacted me yet. so here i am with this gadget that is useless because these people do not do not have it together.

I purchased majicjack from Wal-Mart about a month ago. It worked as soon as I hooked it up, location is in Texas. I am now deployed to Iraq and magicjack is still working. I have had no real complaints with this product. They must have upgraded it or something. But so far so good!

magic jack/ blows
I used my magicjack for 4 months then i had an issue with my headset. Magicjack sent me another unit that was going to be billed if i did not return the original one. Anyways the problem was the headphones not the jack.
Returned it and received confirmation the other day that they received it.
Yesterday Jan.4/10 I plugged in my magic jack and it stated we have an up date for you, Wait till finished.
That was the operative word finished! It upgraded and after 3 hours in total with there csr's. They are certain my problem is that I use Nero for burning disks on my computer, And that nero is not compatible with Tragicjack.
Well I said that's funny I have been using it for 4 month's with Nero on my desktop and had no problem till you started your up grade?
This was ignored as was my request for a new Tragicjack.
They had a great idea with this. And his proud daughter got sucked in to. I hope this helps put a dent in sales of

Have had magicjack for over 2 years now on a 5 year contract with some issues (including failed jack which I did get returned and credited for) but nothing earth shattering til now. I've been without any service for several days! Seems my magicjack cannot connect or get verified by the registration server...even though I am connected to internet and able to browse the web. Aside from no service is that when I click on my soft phone for more info it apologizes and tells me they are having a server problem and that I should try to reconnect in a few minutes. Well, after trying and waiting a day, I finally get into chat session with someone who checks out my issue and tells me it's not my problem (doh!) but that they are having problems with their server that very minute and that I should try again in a few minutes to connect! Of course, I said that problem has been going on for more than a minute and that I wanted someone to email me back with status and when I would be up and running. Agent said she would...ha, ha, never happened. I am going to try chat help now one more time to see if I can get a rational and believable answer. If I don't I am going to ask for credit and return my device as useless and then file a complaint with the BBB. Yes, I'm fed up and especially since I've been a staunch supporter and have recommended magicjack to family and friends---I'VE BEEN SCAMMED!

Magic Jack didnt work for a whole year for us, just froze our computer every time we used it. After getting a new computer this year, we asked for a year of service back as compensation for technical issues they couldnt solve. We didnt ask for a refund.
Here's some of the text from an uncaring, smart-aleck customer service person :

CK: As of 15 minutes ago, yes
Junrex: Good
Junrex: Since it has been activated
Junrex: :)
Junrex: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
CK: How about my request for compensation as discussed with Marcus earlier. Please dont run me in circles like this.
Junrex: If he submitted it then probably he will w ork with it.
CK: How will I know the result. I'll wait if you need to go check on it.
Junrex: No need CK
CK: I realize you dont want to continue chatting with me over this. Please answer my question.
Junrex: Just wait for the result Carol since Marcus escalated your request
CK: Can you connect me to him? How will he get in touch with me?
Junrex: you can end this chat and look for Marcus

If it works, its great. If you have problems, you are just run around in circles by someone on a chat line who keeps asking you the same question rephrased again and again and finally just asks you to go away. So much for fairness and real communication.

This company's Customer Service should be called a Customer Insult line. If you want to be asked stupid questions, disregarded because you are a female CHAT with Jack.
Billing is a rip off as well. I was not addressed directly, the item was mailed with my son's name attached and then they told me that my landline phone number belonged to my son and asked how my son and I are related. I gave birth to him was not understandable to this ###.
Do these ###s understand english. Who are their operators any way? The company must not pay them much. Are we communicating with someone in a third world country and that is why we can't speak to anyone directly?
If you want to be treated with respect. Don't call or do business with MAGIC JACK. I'll you get is JACKED!

I bought the magicjack to use when I travel or in my garage with my laptop. I carried it for the past year not using it because of my cell phone. I plug it in and it is deactivated. I tried to renew the device/contract but was unable to. I used the chat 4 days in a row each time being transferred to a higher level of service. Each time I was told that they were sending the info to the tech department and they would get back to me within a day.
Still the device is deactivated after 9 days of waiting. Still the same answers like I am presenting them with a problem for the first time yet nothing. The device works for some but not always. They deactivate them for non use no matter if the contract is up or not. Customer service is very poor in both knowledge and communication.
Bottom line: Dont waste your money. You are better off handing it to the guy standing on the corner wanting money for beer, at least he is honest!

Magic jack sucks. I bought a magic jack and I register it with my personal information but I wasn't using it so I decided to give it away to a friend. I wanted to edit or change in my information for security purpose, I couldn't. I called magic jack customer services center and the stupid lady who attended to me said she can't do anything about it. she refer me to live person online and after wasting a whole lost time/hours, I still can't get any information. out of annoyances I wanted to deactivate my account, I still can not deactivate.
