On 5/24/17 our power was shut off for $112. I called and paid immediately by 3 pm upon realizing I made the mistake and forgot to pay. I was told that because if was close to 4pm that we would need to wait 24 hours to have power turned on. Because the guys on the field work 7-4:30!
Today is 5/25/17 and it's 2 pm and we still have no power. When I called I was told they have until 2:36 pm.
This is terrible All for $112 !
power shut off
I received an ebill on 5/1/17 stating I owed $910. I was with a friend and laughed saying, holy crap- there's a good indication that my job has kept me busy. The due date was 5/6/17. I paid the bill before the due date. Full, exact amount of the 5/1 statement. I saw that on 5/8 my check had cleared. On 5/10 I came home to a home without power. Apparently there is a mysterious different notice saying I owed another $100 or so and that is why they turned off the power. I never received this notice. I went to their website for amount due, using the online program to pay the bill. So as I type this I am laying in a room that is 45 degrees with ten blankets on me. Meanwhile I will worry all night that our basement doesn't flood because we use a DOUBLE sump pump. We are the lowest ground in the county. I spoke with nyseg at 2pm and not one single person could 1) explain why it happened or how I could possibly know about that other $100. 2) do anything more than put me on a list of work orders to reinstate within 24 hours. 3) apologize for their mistake. I am supposed to receive text alerts which I didn't get and I never received a call from nyseg stating their plans. This is wrong and me and my family are the only ones suffering through it. Life was busy so I was late, but I paid it before the date given to me. Even looking at my account tonight I see the $910. No idea where that other money came from. Even with that said, I paid that money immediately so power could be restored. Then I was told it could take up to 24 hours. This is unacceptable because I did all that I could to pay you in a timely manner. It is not my fault that there is an issue with your system, yet I'm the only one freezing my butt off- excuse me- we- husband, two kids, two dogs and a cat are freezing tonight. Ironic that tomorrow night I pick up a brand new boat while tonight I sleep with a flashlight. It is absolutely ridiculous. Your system stinks. I HATE that I have to give you business.
providing electricity
Ok my power was shut off for 177.83 when the technician came out I was not home I went to the office in hornell NY she told me I needed the whole amount I then went to department of social services for help they had me do another financial statement and was told by a David that works for nyseg that if I pay 177.83 my power will be restored today and I paid that after I asked him three times if I pay the 177.83 will my power be restored he said yes it will. I was at the department of social services when all this went down and now my power still isn't restored and I have a four year living with me and we now have no water either now they want another 180.50 to turn my power back on
I feel they lied to me
unethical behaviour
Our meter was broke for 5 years and we had no idea. NYSEG was supposedly reading the meter which I'm doubting at this point and I find it hard to believe that they didn't realize it read the same thing for 5 years! Then when I realized it, I called and they fixed it and then charged us $800 as an estimate for the years it was broke! NOT my problem! NYSEG is responsible for that meter, not us! We should NOT be charged like this! This is completely taking advantage of a customer for their mistake!
the same thing happened to me they were reading mine for 2 years and decided I was not working and sent me a bill for over $2000
shutting off power
Tenant didn't pay electric bill and was evicted on 9/22/15 for failing to pay rent. I had no knowledge that the electric bill was not paid. It should be automatically place in my name "Mahopac RAD Realty", because the apartment has electric heat only. When I saw a notice on the door 10/7/15 I call NYSEG that day. Told them the tenant moved out can the put the electric bill in my name. They said yes they would send some one out 10/8/15. On 10/8/15 they said someone stole the meter. No one else could have stole the meter, but we had an electrical inspector check and he found no tampering. Still NYSEG have not turned on the power. They said it would be on today 10/30/15 and now they say 11/4/15.
new contstruction install
NYSEG planner convinced us to install underground stating can be completed in 2 weeks.
2 months later we are still without power no service connection has been scheduled and no one will answer to when it will occur
horrid service
Me and my fiance fell on hard times this passed year. August of 2014 NYSEG had shut us off. We owed them like $400 so I paid them the pre-agreed $200 on a friday called them with the receipt number to make sure they had received the payment, she said "we haven't received anything, call us on Monday to talk about it." I told her I have 2 young children and I'm pregnant. She said there was nothing she could do.
So I called back on Monday "we haven't received any payment so we can't turn your electric back on." I told her I have the receipt and tried to read her the number and she cut me off and said "I'm sorry ma'am there's nothing we can do". So for the next 2 MONTHS I went without electric on and off the phone with these nit-wits arguing. Now mind you, I was shut off the last week of August so by now it's October and FREEZING. So towards the end of October I was arguing my usual case, the lady told me the last payment we received was August 26, 2014. My response was " are you f*****g kidding me, I was told over 50 times in the last 2 months that they never received that payment, which is why I was never turned on.". She then said "it says here that your meter kept running even though the electric is off" nobody ever told me this. She said "in order to have you turned back on you need an inspector to come check your electric" I said fine, called my landlord, who is a ###-lord, and told him everything that was going on, he said "well you should pay your bill" I told him I have and I need an electrical inspector out to check the wiring. He said he wanted us to pay for it, took us another 2 weeks of arguing with his dumb ### and finally he paid them.
The guy came to my house and said "I'm not even charging you for this visit, your outside wires are frayed and need to be replaced" I said great.
Another two weeks of arguing with my landlord to pay for this $3000 job to get done, he finally gives in, and they fix it, the inspector came directly after and approved it, they turned my electric on, but whatever dumb ### turned the electric on had shut my gas off, so we had no heat in the beggining of December. I called NYSEG and the woman said "what is your address because I see your account was closed". I gave her my address and she said " this account is in Edwards (my fiance's) name". I said I have no clue how that happened as I never shut off my service and he never opened one. So I said whatever keep it how it is. I put Eddie on the phone, he told her the situation, and she said "well it's a friday so we'll have someone out by Monday to turn it on" he asked to talk to a supervisor right now. She put him on hold for 25 mins, came back and said we will have somebody out tonight to get that on for you. The guy finally came at 9pm. My kids and I were at my sis-in-laws because it was about 20° outside and in my house. My fiance called and said the house was finally warm. We went home at about 10pm another NYSEG employee came over and said "I came to turn your gas back on" I told him it was already done and he stated nobody put it in the logs. I told him to check, he checked apologized for the late time and left (note: he's the only Decent person I have dealt with during this year or so with these people)
So now fast forward to June, we get another notice, Eddie calls and talks to a man who says, and I quote, "if you pay us $120 we will stop the shut off until tomorrow when u can give us the extra $250 u owe us" Eddie said OK and called me to find someone we could borrow money from, my Gma let us borrow it, I called ready to give them the info (not even 45mins after Eddie talked to the guy) and she said "I'm sorry ma'am but that extension is no longer available". I flipped and said it wasn't even 45 mins ago that he talked to this guy. She said well someone has been dispatched so they could show up any minute and we can't get ahold of them to stop it. Eddie called them back and asked what we could do, once again I quote, " wait for the guy to come to your home and pay it in front of him" Eddie said OK, we waited all day at home (meanwhile my kids missed a drs appointment and I missed another appointment) finally 9pm rolls around, nobody ever came.
Saturday comes and Eddie calls to pay them the $200 they bumped it up to. The woman said "well u have to pay us $480 to avoid the shut off" he said this is ridiculous so even if I pay u this $200 you will still shut us off? She said yes sir. He said then I'm not giving it to you (we still have the money, trying to find the extra $280 to pay them) so I will be calling tomorrow and b******g them out. We have been given 4 different prices in just 2 days!
Unfortunately they r the only electric provider around us so we have no choice but to use them.
I would NEVER in my life recommend them. EVER.
shut off service without any prior notice
My service was shut off at 10 am this morning for a non payment of 100 on a 600 bill. I called them immediately and made payment. It is now 8:18 pm and I still have no service. I could not make dinner for my children, we have no water to drink, can not use our bathroom. How is this legal? I made the payment, they never even notified my of a disconnect.
overcharged/illegal shutoff
For the past year I have had billing issues with NYSEG. The bills have been WAY over the monthly fee. I have gotten behind but my parents have helped me to pay the bills off in June I had a shut off 2014 my parents paid the bill in full of what was owed and the power was not shut off. Then in August of 2014 I came home from an appointment my power was shut off Nyseg was called they told me I had to pay seven hundred and ninety dollars for them to come to my home and turn the power back on which was the total bill owed. My father Richard Spriggs senior paid the entire NYSEG bill off in full ...then my September bill came on September 5th I was told I owed one hundred and forty two dollars which is impossible I was build three different bills for September which I have. They showed up October for another shut off stating I was over $1000 behind on my bill and we're going to shut my power and heat off again. We then paid them 200 and $40 to keep my services on .I cannot get a direct answer from nyseg where they are coming up with this amount that I DO NOT OWE ! I HAVE PROOF OF ALL MY PAYMENTS ALL THE DIFFERENT AMOUNTS THEY KEEP TRYING TO SAY I OWETHAT I DON'T. I received another threat of SHUT OFF DEC. 8 2014 WHEN I ONLY OWE $142.00 I HAD to go HEAP FOR EMERGENCY HELP SO THEY DIDN'T SHUT ME OFF . HEAP HAS NOW APPLIED $395 TOWARDS MY ACCT. I SHOULF HAVE CREDIT NOW. PLEASE HELP ME I'VE DONE EVERYTHING & TRIED EVERYTHING. ..

I agree. I have owed NYSEG around 400 for 3 year's now and that is with a payment arrangement towards that balance. Last month I paid over 500. Yet my bill did not go down a significant amount. Something very fishy is going on here because no matter what I pay the bill keeps going up instead if down. I 100% believe NYSEG is over billing me and I have full intentions on having a lawyer look at it. Con artists.
poor customer service, continued brown outs, refusal to do any preventive maintenance
NYSEG continues to provide horrendous service. For fifteen years we have been experiencing brown outs which lead to appliances failing after only four years. We lose power on a beautiful sunny day when there is no wind. Most recently I called 10 days ago to explain there is a white pine branch which fell on the high wire in front of our house. I was told it would be taken care of on March 8th. It is now March 18th and we are expecting an ice storm. When I called NYSEG to ask why they hadn't come I was told by very RUDE Paulette, "They will get to it when they get to it. THAT'S THE WAY IT WORKS. The trouble ticket is still open." I asked for a Vice President or a President contact name because I have had it and Paulette told me they are "too busy to speak to me. "
gas/electric bill
Hi my name is Dixie Parsons and I am a first time home buyer and my husband and I have been living in our home for 4 months now. We have received 4 bills now from Nyseg, the first two were about $95.00 each which was fine, and then then we got a bill for 185.00 in October, so initially I called and they said it was an estimated bill from the previous year, which then I replied that we just moved in so they said on the months that they do not read the meters we can read them to get an accurate reading, which was great our bill went down to $83.00 dollars. Then Novembers bill came and it was $245.00 so again I called and they said due to hurrican Sandy they did not have enough people to do the meter readings so we would have to read again to get an accurate reading, which again was fine. My husband read the meter and the next day I received a new invoice of $179.00 which confused me so I called back and gave them the reading again, they said it was the same as my husbands reading I began to explain to the woman that in the last two months we have been using the furnace and electric the same and cannot understand why it is so much higher and she could not give me a reason so I spoke to another employee there and she again could not help me. So feeling very confused as to why it was so high and not having any answers I called back for a third time and asked if someone could come out and look at my meter to make sure there was nothing wrong with it and the response I got was that I would have to call an electricitian and if it was a Nyseg problem they would pay his bill and if it was something wrong in my home then I would have to pay for it. This does not sit right with me considering that my meter was supposed to be read by a Nyseg employee this month in the first place I feel it should be there responsibility to come check my meters because this bill seems too high for this time of year when it is just my husband and myself living here and we both work 50 hours a week so we are not home for very long. It concerns me that the people at Nyseg do not care enough to help out a customer who obviously is concerned about her future bills with them. I can be reached via email [protected]@aol.com or phone [protected]. Thank you.

The onus to resolve this may be on you but It's not complicated. Ask them in writing certified mail return receipt requested, to prove the debt by issuing you supporting documentation. In the same letter tell them upon which failure according to the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act you do not want to be contacted again about this debt or they will be in violation of federal law and you will have noooo problem to sue them out of their predatory scam business. Google cease and desist letters. Goodluck and provide an update pls.
frequent power outages
Last week we had three power outages - all on beautiful days - so not weather related - June 16, 2011 for almost 4 hours, June 20 and June 21st. There is almost never a week that goes by that I am not resetting all my digital clocks because of power sugers or complete outages or low voltage. They never give you an explanation when you call. And if you are one day late with your payment, they send out a very threatening letter. Worst company to deal with. I have lived in Pound Ridge for 10 years and wished I had bought a generator because NYSEG is so inefficient.

i agree with the person who complained... right now, with hurricane irene working it's way up the coast, i'm trying to figure out how i'm going to deal with this. i don't drive, my husband works away for a week or more at a time, and there's no public transportation, none of which really is nyseg's fault. however, for the past two and a half years, whenever there's a storm, we lose power. it's not 'if' we will lose it, it's a given, we'll lose power... and there have been many times when the outage is close to a week! the inefficiency is staggering! if the reason is all those damned trees, then cut them down... don't sit around and futz all summer, send the work crews out to cut the trees, BEFORE they fall on the lines and cut power to the customers. bill the property owners for the costs... in fact, i'm surprised that they don't fine the property owners whose negligience allows their trees to fall on power lines. whatever, just be proactive and do something to prevent the rampant outages!
i can't wait until we can move out of this godforsaken hole and get a power company which actually delivers power!
why do we have so many outages in pound ridge. This is like living in a third world country. Why should people have to buy generators? That doesn't make sense. Gotta cut down trees, I think. Does NYSEG ever tell us why so many outages?
poor consumer care

This is a formal /personal complaint regarding NYSEG’S business practices as well as their abuse of “Power” and I don’t mean electric or gas. On Thursday October 14th I received a call from my daughter. She said our electricity had just been turned off. ”Some guy from NYSEG shut the power off and came to the door to give me a notice”. My wife was also notified of the situation and she left her job early. When I got home she told me that an Electronic payment that was scheduled for 9/24/2010 never went through. Unfortunately we were on vacation in Ocean City at the time so she could not check our accounts on line. This is what really burns me, we were less than $200.00 in debt to these people and it would not have been 30 days past due until 10/15/2010! We never received notice of their plans to shut us down. They say they sent us a shut-off notice but I do not believe them. All our other mail was present when we got home from vacation even newspapers but nothing from NYSEG. Another problem is the fact that I have severe sleep apnea and I am supposed to sleep using a C-PAP Machine with 6 liters of oxygen. I notified NYSEG of this and their words were “we won’t do anything without a call from your doctor” and even then they could not guarantee when they could turn our electric back on. I made the call to my doctor’s office and explained the situation to them. This was very embarrassing to me. They called NYSEG with my information and still we went 24 hours with no electricity. WHY? In this day and age it is NYSEG’s practice to shut a families electric off with no notice for an unpaid balance of under $200.00 and not even 30 days past due! What if we had young children in the house? We had no heat, no phone, and no lights. We lost food in our refrigerator. I was late to work the next day and my wife had to use personal time and take the day off. WHY? We have been good paying customers and this is how NYSEG handles its business. If I could I would close my account and get service elsewhere but as we all know; NYSEG IS THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN! (And that’s not a monopoly?) The more I talk to people it seems a high percentage of them have had issues with NYSEG. Some not as aggressive, some were even worse. How is NYSEG able to get away with their apparent disregard of peoples day to day life. Do we not have the right to be informed and to address our accusers before retaliation? For reasons I cannot understand my family’s life, for 24 hrs, went from Modern Day to Stone Age with the “Flick of a switch”. It is very unsettling to me that NYSEG has that much POWER.

I'm really upset with NYSEG our family just moved 35 miles into a complete new place and we had to set up with NYSEG and I always paid the bill online on time Second week of every month then suddenly out of the blue after ALL summer of using TWO air conditioners our electric bill shoots up to over 500.00! We called them and they tried saying it was our electric heater. Our SINGLE electric heater that has less voltage power then our large air conditioner! They have been adding onto the bill ever since giving us nothing but shut off dates. They just keep telling us it's under "Investigation" I'd like to hear about this investigation that has given us zero updates and no progress just continuous high payments. Sometimes they forget to send us bills in the mail telling us they sent them. We put ourselves on a budget to manage the high payments while these investigations were to go on then not even getting it ONE time they canceled us the next month saying our payment was late and it wasn't! We had been driving out to their office to pay! So my one time budget plan of 135 went back up to minimum shut off warnings of 200 + My husband just got his paycheck because we just got a bill on the first telling us again that our shut off date is in four days! On the 4th My husband just got his paycheck on the third and we went down to the office at 8am and they are closed! What are we going to do?! I'm terrified from the other comments I read that someone will just come to my home and turn us off! Can they do this to us?! I have three children small tiny children and if they turn us off they will terrify them! So scared of what is going to happen my husband has been on the phone calling numbers left and right because we just don't know what to do!
We have had problems with the electronic payment since setting it up 4 months ago. They terminated our "budget plan" saying that ONE of OUR payments were late. Yea- it was late because of them. They also threatened to shut off the power in one letter. We have NEVER been late paying them! One discusting women I spoke with didn't want to hear anything I had to say. She was completely RUDE! I had to hang up and call another person at NYSEG. **They need to retrain some of their customer service people.**
shared meter
We moved into a trailer in Silver Springs, NY, renting from Mary and Charlie Say. We noticed our first bill from NYSEG was a bit high, but when Mary Say opened her shop in the barn, the fall after we moved in, the bill got very high, and we noticed her phone number on the bill. She was running 4 electric heaters, and our bill skyrocketed. We got a deal with Gateway, Mary Say said we should not use Gateway, to drop it or there would be war. She started giving us twenty dollars toward electric, when we asked why, she said, our electric was run through the barn, vapor lights, her shop and workshop, everything that ran the barn. When we complained summer 2009 to NYSEG, they said there was nothing they could do, no need to come and see the electric boxes. Gateway said it was illegal, The Says said they were putting there own box into the shop, but still gave us twenty dollars. I spoke to a woman at NYSEG that told me everything was being put into a folder, they would get back to me, now after a month, they say there was no such folder, and Public Utility Commission actually yelled at me, said we should have said something sooner, too bad for you. We did not find out it was illegal until we moved, and while speaking to NYSEG about the bill, mentioning the barn, and they said, a shared meter is illegal, and you should not pay any of this bill. We had no idea the Says were breaking the law, Mary Say told us she had NYSEG out to look at the meter, NYSEG said they did not, but every time we call, we get something different, please call me and let me know what I can do
Theft of Services
My daughter has been unable to put ANY Utillities in her name because of a previous outstanding bill. Therefore, she's been using HER FRIENDS NAMES. Her current friend lives in Tn. My question ; isn't that considered Theft of Services. We live in a Complex that has you put the electric in your name before moving in. She's been doing this for years! I have tried unsuccessfully to report that she's doing this an I'm informed - it's NOT THEFT OF SERVICE IF THE PERSON IN NAME KNOWS. What the hell is that? I got in trouble a few years back by allowing my step-daughter to hook into my cable line. I ended up having to PAY THE CABLE COMPANY well over $700! My daughter's a fireperson an she thinks that because of that she's above the law. Her own words - I can do just as i want too an there's not a thing you can do to stop me!

This is about an electric bill that has been through a few debt collections. New York State Electric and Gas has not given me an itemized list that I have asked for.I believe it is an old electric bill dateing back to 1983. It is $4, ooo.00. I have yet to get all the facts and the original dates on that bill. My credit score is low because of it.

incompetence & overbilling
NYSEG will charge high fees even if you choose another supplier--they call these "delivery charges". These are supposed to cover meter reading, line maintenance, preparing budget billing plans and regular billing. NYSEG had not done an actual read on my electric for 10 months--just estimates. This is a violation of state regulations. They tried to blame me and demanded I go into my cellar to read the meter because I had not provided access---THE METER HAS BEEN OUTSIDE FOR OVER TEN YEARS AND IS VERY EASILY VIEWED! They called again a few days later and insisted it was in my cellar. Again, another call! I even had to request my electrician come to check the meter. He couldn't believe they couldn't find it---it even had a NYSEG tag on it. Anyway, finally an actual read was done and NYSEG owed me over $1, 600.00 ! They had given me a $519.00/month budget amount then they BLAMED ME FOR OVERPAYING! They were taking the payments on autopay (which they also denied). Long story short--REPORT THESE ISSUES TO THE NEW YORK STATE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION. You can do it right on-line. They must investigate and assist you. You may also report to the Attorney General's Office. NYSEG has a terrible reputation--you can find out more at the public service website. Good luck!

Have been a customer of NYSEG for over 20 years and started having trouble with them about six years ago. I started to notice that my bills went from $70 a month average to over $230 a month. After calls to them, they told me it must be one of my appliances. I had a new stove with energy star rating, and all of my appliances (stove/oven, water heater...
