team leader does not know how to treat her team, she calls her team stupid people and yells at them. when i was still working for ross in guam i asked her if we are gonna finish scanning the junior pants and she just gave an attitude to me and then said that i ask a stupid question so she gave me a stupid answer, the reason why i asked her if we still continue were we left off is because sometimes when she knows that she's not gonna finish her list in that two days she tells us to not scan everything so that we can finish off faster and when it comes to reticketing she tells us to just put any price on the tag and when she is not making her numbers(the 3000 items in a day) she sometimes double scan those items.so i was just making sure if we still continue were we left off or go scan another department because sometimes she'll tell us "nevermind just go scan the other department that's on the list". and now she's saying that i am stupid, what kind of team leaders are they hiring for ross in guam? managers should check on their employees most often!
unfair labor paractices
Discrimination against age and race of employee. Of Russian origin and over 40 years of age, this store mistreated my wife terribly. She was required to sift through garbage to retrieve hangers, which were then used to hang clothing on without any cleaning being done.
She was sent home for wearing jeans one day. Later a young Caucasian female was hired and was made a manager – with pierced lip with ring in it, visible tattoos, (against company policy) and she often wore clothing not allowed by company policy, yet she was not required to go home and change this as my wife was.
Now she has been fired because she was helping the wrong section of the store get ready for closing after hours… She finished her area in the fitting room and was helping in men’s clothing while the manager was there yelling at the employees to finish by 10:30 or she would cut their hours… Just an ignorant manager trying to get people to perform with threats – this is uncalled for and unacceptable. This store hired 16 new employees and after one week 13 had quit… This is a management problem, not a problem with employees – and it starts at the top with the corporate offices.
This store unfairly uses most all employees as “part time” even though they are short of enough employees to serve their needs. My wife requested more hours but was refused because Ross Stores Inc. takes unfair advantage of certain laws regarding part time employees. The purposely restrict hours to less than 40 to take advantage of the part time laws and overwork their employees.
Recently a woman working in their stock room DIED – was taken by ambulance from work and died a few days later in the hospital from heart problems.
They refuse to give employees breaks and often refuse to give lunch time. They do not even make provisions for employees to use the rest room. My wife worked at the fitting room and was told to not leave her post unless she got a replacement – when she called for a replacement the call was ignored.
Fear is used against employees as an incentive to work. If you do not perform miracles, you will be fired and get a poor job recommendation. This is very unfair stress on employees.
There are good reasons that these stores have many customer complaints – too much work for too few employees who are refused hours so that the big corporate offices can rake in more profits. Customers should put the pressure where it should be placed – complain to the managers about their management of the stores, not to the poor employees who do all they can. Then complain directly to the corporate offices – to those money hungry predators at the top – jerks should be put in jail for what they do to employees and for manipulating the laws concerning part time employees.
Many companies are now manipulating the laws of part time employees, refusing to give them full time employment to save the almighty dollar. My wife consistently worked 38 hours a week and was refused full time even though they were short of workers.
I suggest that people refuse to do business with these stores – pay a few dollars more to shop where employees are not treated like animals. You will find that customers are also treated better in the other stores.
i worked at this store and I was part of management between July 2006-Nov 2009. I totally agree with everything that exrossemployee has said. They work their employees to the ground. I would always take over for employees for lunch and breaks because I believe that if you make your employees feel value that you will get rewarded. I know exactly which manager you are taking about because I ended up transferring stores in 2009 because I could not handle the management. They got a new store manager in 2009 and she was a monster. Constantly telling her employees "there's the door if you're not happy" the work you have to do for min. wage is not fair for the amount of work they expect you to do. I am very sorry that this has happened and I hope someone has contacted you in regards to this. I left company in 2010 because the managers they choose to run their stores are heartless. I am much happier when I am now.
It has only worsened. I work at Ross and it has become bazaar and macabre. I think they are going to kill all the older women who are the only ones left working hard and showing up. The reward for that is nothing but pressure to leave by horrid impersonal scheduling, forced by under staffing to work three jobs at once and then cleaning the whole store at close. The longer you have been there the more they try to get rid of you, costing them more an hour from a worker's tiny yearly raises and they can get paid by the State to replace you with ex-cons, special ed and special needs associates who frankly cause everyone extra work. I work the Fitting room and on a busy Sunday with our extended hours open until 9:30, short staffed with no one working the floor, I am constantly processing boxes of underwear for the backed up stockroom, straightening the toy area, pet area, bra & panty area, glassware, even as far as juniors tops with non-stop people fuxing in and out of the fitting rooms, never missing hanging the 1 - 8 items on the bar to 'count' them. l then was left to pick the whole place up with just an assistant manager and two prima donna head cashiers who specialize in non-essential busy work while the floor worker[s] break our balls in double time trying to make the place perfect after cleaning & working hard all day long.
I hurt so much, all the time, I can no longer sleep and am in a constant state of exhaustion. I wake up all night long with leg pains and knots forming in my calves. They took our cushioning floor mat away last year, because it looked messy, so there seems no getting used to the constant hardness of the floor.
Almost everyone is part-time and that means at times locking us into no more than 12 hours a week scheduled, to then be available 12 hours a day/night, 7 days a week for call-ins. You never know your next weeks schedule until usually Thursday, so there is never a chance to ever make appointments or ever go away or frankly to do anything. Days off are purely recovery days, you just lie in shock. The specialty treatment for some is astounding, building our schedules as disoriented leftovers after friends are catered to. The amount of accidents is also astounding and come from unsafe conditions and being over worked. We have 4 out of 5 managers severely hurt, long term.
Ross is a prime example of corporate greed and unashamed to follow the Walmart example of how to abuse their work force, giving no benefits or bonus, no usable healthcare, no regular days or schedules, open abuse by customers treating their workers like criminals while we see people steal all day while they do nothing; a lawless land catering to cashing out all the funds accumulated by illegal immigrants who destroy the store daily with total disregard. Not to mention the abandoned masses of undomesticated children swarming the store daily and nightly. I fear for America's future.
I can't agree with your comment more. I hope an attorney specializing in labor law will finally come to our rescue. I am not an employee, I am embarrassed to say that I shop at Ross.
I have complained time and time again to management, to the district office, have called Cal-Osha etc. I have taken pictures of lines that were thirty+ deep: ONE LINE! I have seen isles littered with shoes, toys, pillows, and believe it or not, a scate board blocking walk ways. Furniture section and shelving completely destroyed, un organized on a daily basis. I have watched security say, "Have a nice evening" to two women who had just walked out with merchandise that was not paid for. I have seen managers constantly ignore calls for help. I have been told by one employee that they don't get over time even when they are owed it. I see children on roller blades skating in the store, as well as very small children standing up on the top part of the cart when they should be sitting down. I believe Ross stores discriminate against women and minorities as well as the lower economic families who work there and shop there. I believe this is true because they are the ones who shop at Ross most often. I have contacted CAOSHA here in Sonoma Co. CA. and they said it wasn't their problem and didn't know who's it was. They wrote a letter to the Rohnert Park Store in Sonoma Co. CA and their representative denied my accusation. CAL OSHA did not go in and investigate this because like the deputy told me, it wasn't their problem.
I am going to start taking pictures and posting them where ever I can. I am also going to contact the labor board and find out who is responsible for making Ross Stores clean up their act.
It is the most depressing store I have ever been in. I see all the older ladies working their fingers to the bone, lines as long as the building is deep, calling for help, nobody responding. I have told the district manager that shopping at Ross makes me feel bad because they are always understaffed and the employees are being abused.
They stores I am referring to are in Northern California. The worst ones are: NOVATO ROSS, PETALUMA ROSS AND ROHNERT PARK ROSS. I am told that this is one single district, and I am not surprised. All of these stores are always under staffed and the employee turn over is unbelievable. Which makes me believe that Ross is deliberately causing people to quit to avoid paying any kind of bennifits.
I am not going to be shopping there anymore.

The Bellingham WA store is an accident waiting to happen. I have complained via email to corporate within the last year about this store to no avail. Now I have taken pictures with my cell phone and started a file with all correspondence to ROSS. Why you ask? The other day I was in the store and watched a older woman fall while trying to get through the sheet isle. It is no exaggeration when I say it has to be at least 4 feet deep in the isle. It's only a matter of time before ROSS gets sued for an injury at this location(if they haven't already). It is already a fire hazard and a health hazard. I tell you, If I hear of anyone bringing litigation against the Bellingham Ross for injury, the litigants attorneys will be getting copies of my electronic letters and pictures proving they were aware of the situation and chose not to do anything about it.
They have so much stock end up on the floor which becomes totally unsaleable. Stock is mixed up so bad that it is a frustrating experience to shop there. You spend hours trying to find a matching sheet, or towel and end up just walking out without buying anything. Add to that the condition of the food section and I am surprised the health department isn't involved. There are open containers of food and food spills that never get cleaned up. I won't eat at restaurants in that strip mall because I know there has to be a rodent problem stemming from Ross.
I saw and heard staff saying that the stock people were sent home, at 2 pm in the afternoon. I have seen the same item on the floor for over a year. No one re-stocks, and the staff are all back in the dressing room area just talking and having a great time talking to their friends about the people they see on camera. I sure hope they are filming me, because I am filming them. I have gone to ROSS three times in the last year and I have not once seen anyone re-stocking the shelves.
While I was there, I overheard at least 80% of the patrons complaining about the condition of the store. From what I have read on complaint boards Bellingham is not the only store maintained in the manner. In other words, the CEO isn't doing his job, the upper level managers are not doing their job, the lower level managers are reaping the rewards in lost profits and lower wages and higher turnovers in staff.
Maybe someone needs to organize the labor in the stores. Since the word isn't going out from the top down, maybe we have to send them a message from the bottom up. Maybe if they brought up the wages and working conditions (safety being a real big issue), and staff level, the CEO's might take a closer look at how their stores are being operated. Hey, I work for a Labor Organization. I have seen where a Union comes in and turns a facility around.
Wonder why the CEO does not care that the condition of his stores represent him? Wonder why CEO MICHAEL BALMUTH has sold off 1/5 of his shares in the store within the last 3 months? Makes you want to go hmmmmm. Also, do a search on his annual salary - just in pay and bonus he is at over a million. Add to that stock, etc. he is at 14 million. That answers that question.
I am off to do some google-ing on ROSS, litigants and CEO's as well as labor organizations. I am also going to post my complaints on every consumer board I can find. I will also post a complaint with the Fire Marshall and Health Department. Don't you just love cut and paste? Good luck with that Bellingham store Ross Dress for Less. Sure hope any fines and lawsuits are hefty. I will be shopping at TJ Max and Walmart. Their stores are clean!

I don't think I'm out of line in speaking for all of us in the prestigious line of customer service when I say, all of you folks out there that complain endlessly to get someone fired, to get a free meal, or just to feel some small sense of power, need to get a frickin life. If you're actually taking the time and energy to send complaints over all hell and creation (about Ross no less), then you're life has taken a sad turn indeed. You might not be the one making the mess, but it's not the employees. It's the shoppers with no respect for the store or anyone else. If they hired more people, certainly it would be cleaner, but what would make the difference is if the inconsiderate, ignorant, obnoxious ### and ### would just put things back where they found them. Stop complaining to the company and the next time you see someone just throwing things about, feel free to ### them out. Till then, go back to believing what you read in the inquirer, and wondering why your only companion is a cat.

True there is a lot of merchandise found on the floor.
The quickest solution to the "mess" problem is to increase the number of employees working throughout the day. Unfortunately a bigger payroll would mean higher prices. Ross would no longer be a discount store- we would have prices similar to TJ Maxx and Marshall's.
Trevor, please try shopping when the store opens. After leaving two/three hours after the store closes and coming in an hour or two early, the store is tidy (tidier).
ATTENTION ROSS SHOPPERS...
Ross shoppers, when you try on a pair of shoes, size 8, please return them to the size 8 rack with the toe of the shoes facing outward. All shoes coming off the truck are stocked in this fashion. Because no one wants to stay overnight, associates (at busy stores) will just pick the shoes off the floor and put them toe outward from where they were found. If a customer takes a size 7 1/2 shoe and leaves the pair on the floor in the size nine section, it will likely be placed toe outward there.
Ross shoppers, when you remove an item off it's hanger to look at in in the aisle, please return the item on the hanger in the section you found it. If the hanger inadvertently breaks, you may bring the merchandise to the fitting room or customer service, who will see that it gets rehung and return to the correct location on the stock floor. Because no one wants to stay overnight, associates (at busy stores) will just pick the clothes off the floor and put where they were found. The early morning crew will go around and size and sort, time permitting.
Ross shoppers, please don't open sheet, bedding, knives, underwear, food etc. packages. If you find that it is not what you wanted or needed, you can return it with the plastic package covering and your receipt. When you shop at Macy's, Filene's, Blommingdale's, JC Penny, Sears, Kohl's, Target, Wal-mart, K-Mart, etc., do you open the packages? When there's a sign that says, please do not open the packages, should you be allowed to anyways. If the sign says do not enter, should you be allowed to anyways? Should a red light be optional? When you're at your local grocery store, do you open up the jars of BBQ sauce, coffee bags, candy containers, etc.?
Ross shoppers, when entering the fitting room, please present the fitting room associate with the no more than eight items (two pieces count as two) you wish to try on. When finished please return the merchandise as you found it- right side out, correct corresponding sizing nub on hanger, etc.
Ross shoppers, when looking at a towel, if you do not like it after unfolding it, please fold and return to stack of similar towels.
Ross shoppers when looking through the lingerie, if you do not like the style of bra/underwear that you took from the rack, please return it to the correct size location.
Shoppers working with associates can make everyone's experience at Ross more enjoyable. If we (the Ross associates) deliver on our end, making sure new shoes get placed out on the floor toes facing outward with the size of shoe corresponding to the shelf, sizing and sorting all new clothing merchandise in the correct sections, all new sheets sized, all new towels color organized, all new lingerie sized, etc. and customers similarly working (or just being considerate), the Ross brand would be the fastest growing retailer. Perhaps, it could boost the economy- create more jobs. Bring us out of the nearing repression. Help reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Help reduce health care costs. End Poverty. Cure AIDS. Or, at the very least, as I suggested, make the Ross experience more enjoyable for every shopper and employee.
BTW, Trevor what does this even mean? "It is no exaggeration when I say it has to be at least 4 feet deep in the isle." And, if the stock crew arrives at 5:30 am for a 6:00am truck arrival, what time should they leave?

If I got a 100 dollar bill for every customer that said he/she would never shop again and was back within a month, I wouldn't have to work at Ross. Since I am not getting the $100, I would rather they not come back. But, they always do. :(

A year ago was the last time I went to the Ross store in Bellingham Washington. It was a HUGE mess, merchandise in every isle on the floor, people walking on it, you could not even attempt to get a shopping cart through. So I decided not to return until yesterday, and you know things did not change at all...it was still a huge mess. It look like someone had gone down the isle and pulled the merchandise off and threw it on the floors! What is the problem I gone to one in Burlington, Wash and for awhile it was like that, but things have changed they cleaned it up. Is it due to poor management, not well enough staffed? To me it just goes with the society we are raising already...Who cares anyway...and why respect it, it is not mine. Someone needs to take a good look at what is going on. I personally think that there is only so much the staff can do when it's the CUSTOMERS that destroy the store.
a holiday weekend passes and it looks like a hurricane blew through the place, but I'm certain it's not the employees that make it that way. People complaining about the state of any discount department store is like a child that yells at his mother for not cleaning up the mess he made himself. You want a store that's clean, then perhaps people should take better care of how they treat the place when they shop. Just put things back where you found them. Someone must have mentioned that to you in pre-school right? Think about it over your next meal at Denny's on discount day. Let's face it...you're not shopping on Rodeao Drive in Beverly Hills now are you?

Purchasing a pair of shoes a week ago, I came home to find that the toe portion of the shoe was scuffed. Let me back up a bit, and better explain myself.
There have been several incidents when I would go to Ross, see a "shoe" that I liked, and I had to hunt for its pair. Normally, the shoes are somehow kept together, but there have been several times, I either had to look for the shoe on a different rack, or put the shoe back altogether because I could not find its pair. Incidentally, the day I bought my pair of black slip-on, this was the issue. I saw one shoe, saw that I liked it, and I easily acquired the second shoe from a different shelf on the same aisle. It wasn't until after I came home, that I saw that the toe part of one slipper was scuffed. Chagrined, I told myself I would return the item at my earliest convenience.
The following Sunday, I grab my Ross bag, the receipt and head off to the store. The lady in front of me is purchasing a vast amount of items, so, I wait in line for about 10 minutes. While the cashier is ringing up some items, she is pulled aside by Kelly, another store representative. Kelly picks up a pair of shoes on the counter and points out that items that have been worn are not to be refunded. Fair enough.
When it is finally my turn, I hand over my back and complacently await the meager $10 charge to be returned to my VISA. The cashier looks at me. "What's wrong with them?"
"They are scuffed in the front. I didn't notice until I brought them home."
The cashier then turns to Kelly. I can see they are discussing my shoes. Kelly then comes to the register, and with a look of indignation, she tells me that Ross cannot refund me because the shoes have been "worn." So, I spend the next 5 minutes explaining that I never wore the shoes and would only like to get a refund.
Not only did Kelly embarrass me in front of other customers by making me look like some dim-wit trying to return "worn" shoes, she falsely accused me of trying to pull some kind of stunt. Completely and utterly irritated, I asked for the store number, and number where I would be able to speak to someone of higher authority.
Not only had the present cashier refunded a pair of truly worn shoes to a previous customer, Kelly falsely accused me of trying to pull the same stunt.

I cannot believe what I had to experience at Ross in Oakland Park, FL today, July 26 2008, around 10:50am, where I wanted to return two shirts.
I stood in line of the second cash register (ELAINE's), as nobody else stood in line there yet. Then the girl next to her, ANDREA, told me I had to stand in line behind her register. (OT: "This is not a line!" - very rude tone in her voice) Two(!)ladies in the meantime got in front of me (I was there first!) so i went over to the other cash registers as there were less people.
After about 5min(!) ANDREA told me in a very rude way (she almost yelled- in front of all customers!) I could not return my clothes there and had to stand in hers and ELAINE's lane.
Both ANDREA and her collegue ELAINE laughed/ grinned! They made me spend 15 extra minutes at this store-
unbelieveably rude, no customer service!
I hope the store manager will teach these girls how to treat customers. (ANDREA was unbelievably rude, ELAINE was more modest- she "just" grinned...)
I will definately never enter this store again and expect an apology for what has happened.
Who do these girls, especially ANDREA, think they are? I do not expect to be treated like a special customer, but I expect to be treated with respect. They could have told me right away where to stand in line plus let me in front of these women as they came AFTER I entered the store and waited in the "wrong" lane! (Is there a wrong lane for the cashregister? I do not think so!) They obviously did that on purpose.
Never in my life I had to experience anything like that.
terrible costumer service
I have just recently been to the downtown Seattle Ross. I understand that bussiness was busy, but bussiness should not effect costumer service. I have had some poor costumer service before, this was a whole other story. Not only was this store in disarray, it was the slowest check out I have ever been in. Though that is understandable for Ross because they are known for their mess, but I believe that every station should be equiped with all that it needs to properly service any and all costumers. I am from out of state, montana, and I do not have to pay taxes on items such as clothing in the state of Washington because I have already paid my taxes in my pay check. The particular check-out I went to did not have the necessary formalities to do a transaction for me. The person serving me was the store manager and said that I would either have to wait in a different line that would take another hour to get through for me to not have to pay extra taxes on my money. She said that she could not take the time to walk the 5 feet to the other register to obtain the necessary paperwork to do my transaction because she had a line to take care of. That is understandable minus the fact that I was in her line and I should receive the same consideration as all other costumers. I do not know how such a rude person has been appointed to a manager and if that is considered manager material I would be terrified to see what the other workers act like. Apparently the concept of costumer service is inept to the people of the downtown seattle Ross.

I think the Ross Seattle downtown store is not having enough stuff . I wanted to buy a dress, but saw that the queue is huge, and would take me 30 minutes, so I left without buying.

I don't understand why Ross let's the consumer get away with throwing their merchandise all over the floor! It's like a big joke, no one seems to care that the store looks like a pig sty. What's up with that? No other store would put up with it. I have been to T.J.Max, which has the same stuff as Ross and it doesn't look like Ross at all. I think the big bosses better start taking a look at the way the store looks and make some changes, It's an embarrassment to say you work there, people just shake their heads and laugh! It's not fair that the employees get punished to stay and clean up the publics messes, if so then you need to pay a lot more than what employees make there. I hope you take this seriously.

My name is Adela and I used to work at Ross in San Antonio, TX. The one across the highway from North Star Mall, as a fitting room attendant. I’m sorry if you guys think we are rude, mean, or the stores are a mess, but I have to stand up for Ross. We work our ### off to keep up with the stores, but it still gets a mess. People young and old, woman, girls, teens, men, boys, kids trash our stores. I’ve seen business type people come into my store get clothes, shoes, accessories, etc and just leave them on the floor. I’ve also seen a ton of people try to find any little thing wrong with the clothes example the tag not being on, to get a discount on them. You have to understand that people come in and leave clothes where they don’t belong, or throw them on the floor, and of course they get stepped on. Us employees can’t be everywhere at once, and yes sometimes we are understaffed, but if the costumers could put back whatever it is they have looked at back to where it belongs then it wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I understand that it is not your job to do that, but if you’re one of the ones who do that then congratulations, if you aren’t and don’t lie to yourself because most of you aren’t STOP complaining and if the store are really that bad then find a different store. Oh and another thing it is NOT okay to let your kids play with the skateboards, or any kind of balls we have, or open the toys. NOT COOL, and make sure you pay attention to your kids. I had a little girl in the fitting room for about ten minutes. She was crying, and we kept making announcements that she was lost. One of the employees even walked around with her trying to find her mommy, and they couldn’t. When she returned to the fitting room we made another announcement and the mother still didn’t show up. About five minutes later her brother not much older than her showed up to take her to their mother. OMG people pay attention to your kids. We had another little boy take a crap on the floor by the toys because his parents where to busy shopping to take him to the restroom. Even after they found out all they did was say sorry and continue shopping. As for the restrooms we clean them, but the costumers trash them. If you want a clean RR then don’t let your kids go in by themselves and if they do check up on them. I’m really surprised how bad the ladies RR get during my shift. Is it really that hard to flush the toilet, put the top in the trash can, or even throw away your paper towels? Come on. TREAT our store with respect. The fitting rooms can also get really bad. This is my area so I know how bad this can get. There is only 8 items allowed in the fitting room. We have signs posted up saying that in both English and Spanish. You can’t take your baskets in the back no matter what. Our clothes are on hangers for a reason. If they are on them when you take them in then bring the hangers back out along with your number. If the customers would do that then the fitting rooms wouldn’t get bad. We get super busy when we are working in the fitting room. We have to count the items as your going in, and when you are coming out, so be patient with us. If you have time to try things on then you have time to wait in line. It is our job to do all this along with separate all the clothes and hang them on our racks so they can be put back on the floor. We have to do this for all the clothes that the customers give us, what they leave in the front, and what the other employees find on the floor or in the wrong spot. That’s a lot of clothes as you loyal Ross customers know. I’m truly sorry to tell you this, but as you can see we can’t watch your baskets for this reason, but I’m sorry and I tell my customers that too when you baskets go missing. I have to let you know that in my store the employees ask me before they take any baskets. Empty or not and I tell them not to take them especially if I’m not sure if they are anyone’s. You the customers should treat each others baskets with respect. Nobody likes there basket to go missing, so please don’t take them. I wish you could understand this, but I know it will go into one ear and out the other. To all you loyal Ross customers thank you, and I wish all of you the best shopping experience at any Ross locations.
I have worked for Ross for almost 6 years, and you can not get help from your District Manager/corporate office.Forget HR they are no help at all
If the customer gets mad that you did not take back merchandise that not only smells really bad and has been worn many times, they will call corporate and then not only do you have to take the merchandise back but you have to to call and apologize to this person per DM. Then you have to give them a 20% discount the next time they shop in the store...per DM
But you have customer's stealing the very expensive bags and filling them up with merchandise and no staff cause usually all of the manager's are on register's they(customer's) just walk out the door..Ross need's to get a grip and some of the DM's need to work in the stores and find out what really is going on...They couldn't handle it, lets get the payroll in line with what you demand from your employee's..My question is? Before you put down your employee's, can you do what they do...Probably not..

As I was strolling with my merchandise to the check-out at the Ross Dress for Less store on summer at Warring in Memphis, Tennessee, I passed a sweet, little girl with a ball who was bouncing the ball very closely to herself. She was being very quiet and was bouncing the ball gently within two inches of where she stood. She was causing no harm to anyone, and she certainly was not a danger to anyone.
Then, here comes this brute of a manager and snaps, "DON'T BOUNCE THAT BALL!" I couldn't believe it, because I had seen balls thrown in this very store with no comment being made. I quickly spoke out: 'Why not?' The store-woman snapped at me and yelled: "IT'S FOR SAFETY." I could not believe what she was saying since I had witnessed balls being thrown across the store by older boys. I replied: 'Then I hope you tell all the children who are throwing balls not to.' She replied, "Yes, I will." This entire conversation was spoken to me with her back to me.
I came home and immediately looked for the executive offices of the Ross Dress for Less department stores and could not find anything. I did find this complaint board.

You're an idiot, Ross is Awful. Your daughter's inability to keep a receipt is of no concern to store employees, let alone management. I see comments on this site all day about how rude and ignorant the employees are, but what about the customers? Who's fault is it REALLY when the customer cannot fulfill their contractually obligated agreement when making a purchase (after all, a purchase is a contract between the buyer and seller - the receipt is the contract and on the back of said receipt holds the terms). Seems to me that the majority of complaints on here and abroad are just people who have poor management and organizational skills.
I went to a Ross store here in Atlanta, GA...the store is located in a very pretigeous part of town called Buckhead. I went in to exchange a Marilyn Monroe Picture that my daughter brought me for Christmas...I did not have a price tag or receipt as it was a gift. I wanted to return the picture because of the Pink background does not match the pink in my room. I talk the manager in charge and he told me to go and find something to exchange for the picture, so i did but when i came back his whole attitude had changed. I guess since he was a regular employee who was acting manager he was on a power kick. He was very RUDE to me and told me that he did not have the same picture in stock so therefore he could not exchange the merchandise. Keep in mind that the picture was only $19.99...I know Ross stores always look empty but after this encounter i see that they really need the money. The employees are low class and so is the store. After i told the employee that i would call corporate he found it amusing. I was so angry that i did not sleep...i called Corporate and i'm still waiting on someone to return my call...Now i see why this guy found this so amuzing. I WILL NEVER SHOP A ROSS STORE EVER! and that goes for my family as well...with the way that they conduct business..they won't have any.

Today I bought a Michael Jackson book from Ross. First of all there was only one of that kind in the store also it was COMPLETELY damaged, ripped apart, awful! But I am a huge fan of MJ so I had to have it no matter what. So at the checkout I asked the manager for a discount and she rudley snapped at me with a grumpy voice & said no discounts, do you still want it? I was confused, I asked myslef is this manager blind? I asked her if there were anyomre and she said no and she refused to give me a fair discount. So I had no other choice but to buy it full price. Also, this is the same manager that didnt do anything about 1 of her employees that was so so rude to me. Her employee the same day I bought my MJ book, tried to accuse me of stealing a HUGE kids play tent. The tent was out in the open and I just so happen to be looking at it, and she knew she had to clean it up, so she just decided let me take my anger out on this cutomer. I ask you, how will I walk out of the store with a HUGE kids tent that I dont need, I am 21 years old! The employee and manager seemed to have a terrible day so they took it out on a customer. WORST EXPERIENCE! Seems like Ross is filled with grumpy, rude, negative associates that also look uneducated and like they just came out of jail. I have to be honest here.
I just want everyone to be aware that Las Vegas Stores the management is horrible one of the new MODs is Gloria at store #424 on Serene and Eastern (mind you this is a training store so this sets the standards) she talks to her employees like they are stupid as well as cut them off during a conversation and belittles them in front of other employees and customers. She not only does this on a daily basis she does this in front of customers, even the customers think it is rude for a manager to talk to the employee that way. Along with most of the people are not properly certified in a timely manner and have to beg to get any tests completed. On top of that pay checks are short even when you work overtime and when they are it takes you a few time to get them corrected if they even get corrected. I think that is a violation of human rights. To even take a bathroom break is like an act of God. They push you and tell you to hurry and do the FAST program and even at 17 seconds per transaction it still isn't good enough. They pay very little and people are of various ages however mostly minority's which means very little white people and they are put down and told they don't work fast enough even after 8 hours. They only choose the people they like to promote and hold the ones that are qualified back from moving up because they are better in some areas and they would prefer to keep them there. The amounts they pay are ridiculous but I guess we have to shut up and be happy we even have this due to the economy.
I have witnessed several rude incidents at the Ross establishment in Memphis, Tenn on Summer Ave.There is this one particular manager by the name of Angelique.She is so unprofessional and very rude, not only to the customers, but also to her employees.I witnessed her get into an shouting match with a customer because the customer had no receipt for an exchange.I frequents the store often, I overheard a couple of employees talking about the unfair treatment they receives from her.You can actually see the discomfort in the employees eyes when you're shopping there.Someone in Corporate needs to investigate that store and the management.

I work at one of the Ross stores in Tucson, AZ. I have been reading the complaints expressed on this site and I must agree with most of it. Speaking as an employee, I have to say that there are many issues that go on behind the scenes of our store which makes it a little difficult to smile all the time. There are many so- called customers that steal, switch tags and return worn, disgusting, clothing... it is so irritating. For the lady that was disgusted by the dirty boxers... here's the thing, Ross has a just say yes policy now that we all have to follow... so no matter what that customer wants to return, we have to take it back and the managers will put it on the floor... I'm grossed out when I touch this stuff to return it. I know how you feel, but we have no choice and the corporate office doesn't tell us anything about tactics and reasons. To go into the man that talks about how long the lines are and the plumbing... Ross or any corporate store shutting down for bathroom troubles is not going to happen... also the reason why the lines are so long is because so-called customers come into the store and ruin it... they throw stuff all over the floor, take things out of the package and leave it anywhere and people are just filthy, we don't have enough people to run the registers and clean up after grown men and women... maybe if people weren't dirty and nasty and inconsiderate of Ross employees, you'd be able to get out of the store faster. People like this only look at situations from there own point of view, not anyone else's. Know one has a clue what Ross employees have to deal with on a daily basis, I know someone might just quit, but I'm a college student and they work with my school schedule. The main problem with the stores that I have noticed is the managers and the choices they make... so if anyone has a major complaint with Ross, call the corporate office and express your grievances because nothing will change if they know... I also hate this damn F.A.S.T program, it is the complete opposite of fast. It's ridiculous that they force us to bag and scan there way... Get it together.
Ross is terrible for everyone. The management team is not concerned about the satisfaction of the customers or the employees. The only thing that matters is that there's a profit. I had to leave two hours past closing time/my scheduled time every single time. I was locked in and my manager wouldn't let me out until the store was completely recovered. I'm 19, 5'4, 100 pounds, don't drive, and live in Pacoima, an extremely unsafe city. I was scared for my life walking out at 1:40 am and when I told my manager about my issue she laughed and said I needed to get used to working. No, I am accustomed to working. I've worked for everything that I have but I can't get used to being disrespected and harrassed. I was forced to worked off the clock and without a break for the first two weeks. This was unacceptable and resigned after another two weeks. My manager went beserk and put a stop payment on my paycheck which led to a return deposit fee that she refuses to pay.
When I was at Ross, whew, the store was constantly in upheaval. After restoration it would only last so long. I've always liked Ross and for a while I liked putting in my time there but the caring element was zip. Creepy par excellance too, another check mark why I finally jumped ship: things just didn't feel cool, if you know what I mean, after dark. I heard firsthand from a female coworker two women had actually made her cry with ego reducing jibes. Really? I thought this excursion was about shopping. A bit after I and the MOD one late night got cussed out and harassed by an out of water addict, I resigned. Breaks are often missed, skipped, overlooked with workers...OVER worked. Bills have to be paid. We all know. Some are in college or jave to support their kids, and Ross had flexible scheduling. But in the long burn I think this environment does nature's job of clearing them out and away. Retail's steel hard. Its tough but Ross could be a lot better. Customers hiding out past closing time in the bathrooms? Crank callers? Shudder. "Scary."
Yeah, I worked for Ross too. I loved shopping there, I like Ross, but a few things were out of place: dirty- ditto, got that right off. We had a lot of folks, really, shopping for a babysitter or therapist! AND dirty returns; toothpicks on the floor. Constant picking up, or refusing to. LOTS of trash tossers. Which is beyond creepy, especially when its a liquid who you can't define. Don't you shudder at those people who ask to (which, why? they're determined to do so anyway) leave their belongings somewhere up front- no question. I'm already worn out: sorry, I can't work without a break. And I "missed" mine a few times. PLEASE get more than one person slaving in the fit rooms or up front. Support makes a HUGE difference. Ross is a great place to start out or as a less complicated POS but the easiness disintegrates real fast, or later if not sooner. The shoplifting is beyond creepy. And at night alone by the registers? Ummm- no thanks.
I work for Ross in Peoria, Illinois. Ive been with the company for two years since we first opened. Yes...there are many downfalls..but that is with any company. It all starts with the management team. They must lead in a positive manner and set the same expectations for everyone. Payroll does need to be better...but if you are sales floor...pick up the clothes off the floor while u are working and not leave it. We have never stayed 90 min or more past closing. If u work hard throughout the day there shouldnt be any excuse why you should still be there. And by law...you have the right to leave at your scheduled time to leave. We leave 15 -30 minutes after closing. For the person who said they only got a .5 cent raise...are you explaining why so little? Your work ethic? Call offs? My first raise was .28 cents and my second raise was .43 cents. Your raise depends on your job performance.
You should not be returning anything that has be worn, washed or altered. I have refused plenty of returns knowing it was worn and used. The only few times i gave in was when the item was under $10 and then just marked it for MOS. Ross has its issues...as any other company...but when u have a strong mgmt team...its a decent place to work (and i have physically helped two stores raise their customer service scores up) if u dont wanna do yr job...quit and let someone else who will work hard and smile.
The ONLY reason I am working at Ross is because I need the extra money. I could and should have looked elsewhere. The pay is extremely low only $7.25 an hour. Management is poor. Often times if they do not meet their sales goal they'll start cutting people's already extremely low hours. I'm trying to get back into doing something in my field were I am appreciated however; with the job market I had to take what I could get to help make ends met.
I work at the Ross in Miami Lakes, FL. I have worked there for 7 months and I hate it. The two main managers are disrespectful, unprofessional, disingenuous, rude, and laziest people I've ever worked for. I wish customers knew how we were treated, but I doubt even if they knew, they'd respect us at all. The schedules change and no one phones or notifies you. They call you on your day off and practically demand you come-in (I no longer answer my phone when I see its them on the caller ID). They do whatever they can to say "yes" to the customer. There have been days where I've worked 9 hours (and mind you, I'm Part-Time) and I only was "allowed" one 30-min lunch. I've been called a "###", "a little fat girl", "dirty", "whitey" and many other lovely names by customers while working the returns. I've had to stay late into the night to clean up a disaster of a store (thanks impart to filthy customers), as late as 2 1/2 hours. One nights when one of the two main managers are closing, I've seen them unfairly extend hours a couple of times in hopes of meeting or exceeding the goal for the day.
This is not my first retail job. I am a fed up with the way things are done in my place of employment. I spoke to a fellow employee whose worked for the company for more than 10 years and she only makes $1.85 more than me! Are you kidding me?! Is that remotely fair or ethical? Hell no! And to make matters worse, they recently hired over 10 new people and after an couple of training videos- they throw them onto a register. Real training is non-existent. In my past I have held positions of management, and because of that, I feel it my place to assist the "newbies" and train them while preforming my own MANY duties demanded of me. The lines on the weekends become so overwhelmed and long, due to the fact the Store Manager under-staffs us all of the time! Just the other night we closed with 8 people! And that includes the Manager-on-Duty and Front End Supervisor! Insanity! I only took this job because I needed something close to my home and something that would allow me to not commute far from home.
We are often working, individually, the job of 3 or 4 people. And yet, we are paid $7.25/hour. Ross only has 2 Full-Time employees, everything else is Part-Time. I've been at this location over 6 months and still have not received my review. We are given so much work and in such little time. Money is not shown in gratitude for the hard work we sweat and toil over, - no. Only the Store Manager and Asst. Manager are making more than everyone else. Money is all this company cares about. No insurance, no fair pay, no professionalism or ethical behavior- nothing. The vending machines eat our money and sell expired sodas. The bathrooms are among the most disgusting I've ever seen anywhere. I've seen cleaner facilities on a camp grounds and that's saying something. Avoid Ross. Yeah, maybe you'll find a great deal on a pair of shoes or necklace, but whatever you do, DO NOT apply for work here. Its hell on earth in the form of Retail.

Ross is NOT the place for employment. Ross does have a DARK SIDE to the company without a doubt. I would not recommend or refer anyone to work at Ross. Ross does not appreciate their employees and that I do for a fact. When it comes down to raise time you don't get a decent raise. A decent raise is 25 cents or more. Ross wants you work your rear off and don't pay what you deserve. There are no benefits for Part-time. The hours are very horrible. Texas Labor Law is 4.0 hours or more for Part-time should be worked.
At Ross in Houston, Texas Lunch and breaks are being taken or given like they are suppose to be because of Management and Third Key Holders. This should be looked into by Corporate because this is a violation of Texas Labor Law and you will be fined. Ross Records are being falsified by Management especially with the Sizing Process and so forth.
Ross is a racist company and your sexual or sexual orientation of your personal spouse relationship. Degrees matter with this company. If you don't have a degree get ready to get mistreated. :( This company should be investigated for all the violations they have. Watch out everyone!
I think if you have a job you should be glad. There's alot of prople can't find work or simply can't work due to disabilty. We that have jobs need the be thankful, after all we all have a choice to where we choose to work.
I work at the Ross in Nashville, TN, and I have hardly any complaints. Our store is one of the cleanest stores in the district, we are damn near spoiled when it comes to the sched. and we have a true team spirit going from Management - all the way down. Yeah the customers may be some of the most craziest and inconsiderate, but when you have a great Mgt. team behind you - well you can brush all that off. As far as the return policy yeah, we do take back just about everything, but there is MOS, and if you have a Great Mgr. who knows what they are doing, thats how you handle that. And you should not be taking back any UNDERWEAR/CLOTHES, that was on a Today Show undercover investigation, again your Mgt. should be in the know of return policy. Just like you can say "yes" - believe me you can tell the customer "no". (and normally if the customer has a problem w/ it - tell them to call the corporate office - LOL)...I love my discount, I love my double discount... and yeah when I can get something for .99...well that doesn't hurt either. Stop complaining..."you" said "yeah" when Ross asked you if you wanted the job, if you don't like it...do something about it ...DUH!
I work at a Ross in California, and I've been reading all these complains about Ross and how dirty and rude employees are. If you feel that way than take your money else where! Do you think we like staying well past midnight cleaning up and straightening [censor] that customers have destroyed and misplaced just for it to happen again the next day? It is very frustrating picking up clothes off the ground just to come back to see an even larger pile of clothes on the ground! How hard is it to put back something the way you found it? I see a lot of customers who drop clothing and merchandise on the ground in front of me and they just walk off like it's not a big deal. Yeah you might think it's my job to pick after you but I sure don't go to your house destroy your belongings or treat it like [censor] and have you pick up after me! That's why most employees at Ross look unhappy and rude because they are tired of picking up [censor] from lazy and rude customers! And why are the lines so long? Well, why the hell do all the customers decide to make a purchase at the same time? There's been many instances where there's 6 cashiers and no one in line and then BAM! Everyone in the whole entire store wants to make their purchase when there's like 2-3 cashiers. And don't go blaming management for the scheduling because I am pretty sure they don't have psychic abilities to predict how busy/slow business will be when they are making schedules. Now let me go on to customers and their return, everyday we get customers wanting to return an item with no tag or receipt, well hello? How the hell do I know if you bought it here you don't have proof. For all I know you could have got that free at the local shelter. I can not just put a price on it; maybe you should save your receipt and tags?!? And my favorite (sarcasm) returns are where people try to return their washed/worn clothing that smell like weed and drugs so they can get their money back! I've had a lot of people trying to return jeans that they "just bought yesterday" but on their receipt it says they bought it 3 months ago and there are creases on the jeans and stains! And they expect to get cash back but instead will receive store credit, that's when all hell breaks loose because they want cash for merchandise returned over 30 days which the policy is printed on the back of their receipt and they claim no one told them. I hate customers who try to change tags on items, HELLO? we are not dumb when we scan them there are descriptions on them! Come on it's Ross the merchandise is already cheap stop trying to be cheap!It's so funny when I tell customer's that the price is marked wrong and "someone" must have changed the tags they get embarrassed and frighten and walk out with out buying the item.
I hate Ross and the customers that shop there! But I love the people I work with and my managers that's why I am still working there!

Ross has always had a bad reputation. However, I shop there all the time because of bargains. I shop there very often, once in a week at least because to find something really nice among junk clothes you have to do it. I buy a lot for some people from abroad. What happened to me today is unbelievable rude. Below is the story: a month ago I bought two identical dresses for $12.99 each. The person, I bought for, didn't like it, so I came to return them. At customer desk, I figured out that one of the dresses had a wrong ticket (From men's department). Manager of the store named valery martinson shocked me on front of many people by telling "I know you shop often, but we always have trouble with your returning". First of all, thats not true. I don't return used clothes and don't cheat with tickets. It is not just rude, it is unbelievable unexceptional. She made me feel like I am a sort of shoplifter. Can you imagine? She accused me for their mistakes. They sold me that dress with a wrong ticket! I recommeded to do a better job and do not let people to feel so uncomfortable, and of cource she refused ross' mistake. When I told her that she should apologize, she even didn't react. As a result, she refused to return me $12.99 for the dress with a wrong ticket and gave me only a $8 for it. I lost some money because of their mistake, but it is not big money to worry about. She made me feel like a shoplifter, like a dishonest person. It is not right for anybody, and especially for a loyal customer like me, who spend way too much money at that store. I would like the manager who is responsible for hiring people, will solve this matter

of course absolutely NO. It was NEW dress, no smell, no used, I DID have a receipt and original ticket, but in receipt shown a different #, but with same 12.99. Btw, the ticket had a different price 19.99, but i paid 12.99. they messed up, and blame ME. I already complained to corporate office, they promised to take care of and I never heart from them since...
what I learned from this story is: you have to ALWAYS check tickets in a case you return some items...
Did the clothes look used? or did they have a smell to them? Did you have a receipt that said 12.99. Cuz if you did they cant deny that you paid 12.99 for it. duhhhh

I work in mark downs and this new way with for people ? I have to laugh I don't know who thought of this new way of doing markdowns ? They must of been bored while making this new program. Just remember to hit F4, other wise if you dont ? It shows your scanning even though your cleaning up and moving crap that's not suppose to be there.
yeah, that manager/team leader or whatever should be reported to your store manage, district manager or to hr personally. don't let your employeer treat you that way. let the higher ups know that she was telling you to do the work dishonestly.
I remembered the days when Ross demanded that the markdown team must scan 12, 000 units a day. With four people in the markdown team, it was hard work with mininum pay.
