Massage Envy over charging

I had a similar complaint to the one posted by the lady from Naperville, Il
My husband purchased a 1 hour massage gift certificate for me over the holidays last year. At that time the going rate was $39 for the hour massage, based on being a first-time customer. GREAT RIGHT? There was no set of written rules, exclusions or expiration date attached. I went in this past Sunday to get my hour massage and when I handed the receptionist my gift card she said that I owed $10 because the current introductory rate had gone up to $49. I tried to reason with her and was very clear about this not being very "kosher" No luck. I could have made a real scene but I paid the extra and walked. I will call the corporate office.

I was about to join Massage Envy today, but was not crazy about having to give them my credit card and have them auto bill me. Good thing I thought to read some of these comments. Changed my mind. I'd rather be in control of when I go and how I pay (cash...no credit card).

I worked for massage envy for 3 years...they treat their employees like crap. I have heard them misrepresent and even lie to the clients on numerous occasions. I reported sexual harassment to my manager and because he was friends with the man
( who said gross comments, grabbed my but and grabbed another employees breasts) he told us to stop gossiping or we would be fired.We made another complaint and the other female was fired for gossiping. I said i was speaking to a lawyer and i was fired for being unprofessional. The manager threatened to ruin my reputation and find people to create stories about me if i continued to ..as he put it make up stories about my coworker, whom he goes to church with and plays softball with. This company is dishonest and has unlawful practices.

Rates go up and things change. Did you ever think that maybe they don't make enough to put up with you crap? There are rules to follow and it seems everyone wants everything cheap and practically free. There are also huge entitlement issues going on here. I think everyone on this board is sad. Boo Hoo

Massage Envy deceptive billing practices

Upon finding out that I was expecting a baby, I went in to Massage Envy on Nov 1, 2009 to cancel my membership with a Doctor's Note- which is what they require in the contract.
I followed all their rules and obeyed the contract. To this day they have continued to bill my card monthly and Manager I spoke to claims they seem to have lost my file containing the cancellation paperwork and are very sorry for the error in the billing. " Blah- Blah" .

So I resubmitted another Dr's note and they promised to stop billing my card immediately. Yet will not refund me the 4 months they charged me for massages I never received after I cancelled the first time... even though they admit the error was on their part ?

Very poor business ethics. I will warn everyone not to use them. Now I will have to file a legal complaint if I want to ever get a refund. What a nightmare!

Massage Envy bad business practices and deception

Do not fall for their membership schemes! I did, and I got locked in to an automatic withdrawl of $52 from my bank account for 12 months.

They DO NOT allow you to cancel! Even for a cancellation fee...there isn't one!

The thing is, my niece works there and I didn't know it when I signed up, but she told me a secret about their company since she worked there: You CAN get a 6 month membership, but they DON'T tell you about that...they just talk about the 12 month one, so you don't even know there's other options. The reason is because the employees get paid hourly salary plus commission is an added bonus, with the commission being much less if they only sell a 6-month rather than a 12-month.

And there's even a 3-month membership! NEVER knew that, otherwise I would have signed up for that and NOT for the year-long one. Employees get no commission for selling those memeberships...

So what does this all mean? Means they don't tell you about the other 2 options because as employees it doesn't benefit them as much to mention them. So they only talk about the 12-month. Plus, it's not like they'll not get any pay...they get hourly PLUS commission, so the commission is just an added bonus. Greedy folks.

Your only options are: suspend your account plan, though they say you will still end up having to pay at a later time, so you're not getting out of the deal by doing this, though it's a temporary fix. The other thing is, with the massages you don't end up using, you can turn those into gift cards.

BUT AGAIN, when you want to turn one of your pre-paid massages that you didn't end up using into a GC, they charge you an additional $10 to turn that massage into a gift card!

Right now I'm trying to get my bank account # changed so they can't pull straight from my bank account. This was a BIG mistake!

my ex girlfriend works at the altamonte springs location and said the same issues go on regularly with every client. Its a scam to get you frustrated in trying to cancel or get refund. No one will call you back ever. They say they cannot cancel when they can. They tell you they cancel then dont. Its the wait you out game so you will give up. They are franchised but sounds like a corporate game to me. She gave me so many stories especially one where the womans son died and they still did not refund the money. Its hard sell on contracts and they will tell you its easy to cancel but if you dont after 3 days you never will have any luck. they work on commision and they will be fired if they do no thit 15% attach rate. they get 850 and hour plus a tier bonus for 15% and so on according to their memberships. thats why its hard to get out once you sign it. thats why you dont get all the info up front. thats why you shouldnt give your credit card number as you will never be able to get out of the contract. if you move somewhere where there isnt a massage envy within a 25 mile radius you can opt out. and rates arent honored in other areas of the country of what you signed up in. plus if you miss your appointment and dont cancel youre charged. again your credit card will be charged.

While you are correct, PLEASE remember the Therapists (at least where I worked) Are NOT given an hourly wage + commissions on membership. That is the front desk only. Therapist are paid per massage perfomed and aren't paid for no-shows.

Massage Envy you pay extra for your loyalty!

Massage Envy is such a ripoff. I will never set foot in that place again. My husband had purchased me an hour and a half massage from their establishment. I scheduled it with a masseuse I had used before. As I was checking out, I simply handed the receptionist my gift card and started to walk out (I'd already left the masseuse a cash tip). She called me back and said, THAT WILL BE $40 MORE. Huh? I explained to her that it was for an hour and a half massage ($74). She said we only give gifts cards in cash amounts not time. [censored]. My husband walked in and said he'd like a giftcard for an hour and a half massage! Worse than that, she told me because I had been there before I was not eligible for a $74 massage. So they repayed my loyalty by charging me $40. So they charged me for $114 for an hour and a half msg. If I was going to be charged for that, I'd have rather gone to a spa than Massage Envy (the Wal*marts of massage). Can you imagine if i would have given a gift card to a friend/coworker as a gift and then they had the privilege of paying an EXTRA 40 plus tip. Shameful. I predict they will be out of business by 2011.

I used to work at a massage envy in my area and I have both good things to say about them and bad. The good things are that they do offer more affordable massages, but in a lot of cases (not always) you get less than or pretty much equal to what you'd expect for a $39 or $49 massage. I have met some excellent therapists there and I have also met some really crappy ones. Yes, they are less than upfront with the contract details and in some cases outright lie about it and they are really bad about screening clients and the pay for the therapist is rather insulting. Also, there is no down time pay so if you have to turn someone away for medical reasons, the LMT doesn't get paid for that hour and the company is rather irresponsible with that because they really don't like you to turn clients away, for any reason. One thing I really liked about my location was that tipping was strongly suggested and if the tips were low without a complaint the front desk would flag the file. That being said, LMTs are not waitresses and 60% of their income should NOT be made off of tips. Like I said, there are good and bad things about working for Massage Envy and also getting a contract with them. They really are the McDonnalds of massage establishments and don't expect too much because you may be pleasantly surprised in some cases if you go in with no or lower expectations. However, a person shouldn't feel that way about a service they are receiving, let alone a health service.

she was rude, massage envy sees people like that all the time who are too good to wait and be courteous to any of the people at the front desk, and just throw a gift card on the counter and walk away. we respect you so please respect us.

Even if it was for the introductory price, that doesn't change a bit because if she is a member she gets the introductory offer. What you [censor]s commenting here need to realize is that just because you don't believe it or you think someones actions are rude doesn't mean it didn't happen in that way. So maybe you both should think before you post.

I agree with the comment and not the complaint. How could you just basically toss a gift card at the front desk and just walk away without finishing out the checkout process. First of all rude and uncouth and why would you get a cheaper rate especially when you have already used the one time introductory session. Sounds like the complainee doesn't even have the manners to show the person behind the counter some respect, of course they're going to bring up that you still owe money. Plus when someone does that you automatically think that something fishy is going on and have to run after someone because they are technically stealing.

What's sad it is how the truth get's lost in your comments. Massage Envy does not sell gift certificates which pay for a specific service. They sell gift cards for any dollar amount. Then when you request a specific service the cost of that service varies depending on several factors: 1) Where in the country you receive the service (if you live in an expensive state where primarily Democrats control the government & the cost of living is high because of the dependence on government services) you'll pay more for everything including massages, 2) the length of the service ( a 60 minute session, a 90 minute session, etc.), 3) whether you qualify for a one time introductory service or not, and 4) whether you want the gift card to pay for a gratuity or not.

Rates don't change whether you pay for a service by cash, credit card, or a gift card. So if you husband told you that he bought you a gift card for an hour and a half you need to realize several mistakes he made: 1) Massage Envy has not, does not, and probably will not offer hour and a half massages (a 90 minute massage). They do, on the other hand, offer 90 minute massage SESSIONS which include an 80 minute hands on massage and 5 minutes before and after the massage for therapist consultation, minutes undressing before the massage, and dressing after the massage. 2) How much a 90 minute massage SESSION costs depends on the factors I listed above. So, blame the misunderstanding on your husband and not the stated policies of massage Envy clinics. And, next time state the facts truthfully and completely before you claim that anyone or any business is a rip off.
And by the way would you wager that same $74 on whether Massage Envy is not only still in business in 2011 but whether or not they continue to be the most successful therapeutic massage business in the world in 2011? They will be because of great service, great pricing, and millions of satisfied guests and members in over 600 clinics nationionally.

Massage Envy unethical behaviour

I went to massage envy for the introductory massage $39 for an hour. The massage experience was not so great and didn't make a difference to my sore back. At the end of my therapy session, they forced me to get a membership with them which I declined but they managed to book a second apointment after next 3 weeks. My contact information changed during the next 3 weeks due to which I missed the courtesy call. Guess what they charge me 100% for a no show. Yes this is for the apointment that I forgot. Even physical therapist charge you a smaller amount of fees for no shows. What I'm pissed off about is they will not even make you aware of this unethical policy before your'e booking an apt with them. So be careful. They are big cheaters

You should have let them know your contact information changed. When a new client books an appointment they are told to be there 15 minutes before their appointment to fill out paperwork and if they cancel same day or no show then they get charged. It's your fault for not showing or providing new contact information. That's part of Massage Envy. It's not very hard.

Massage Envy unfair contract

The contract that Massage Envy uses is called a Contract of Adhesion in Contracts Law. When this contracts are argued in court, it is likely that the judge will hold for the plaintiff (in this case the customer). In most cases, the court will refuse to enforce terms that it finds unconscionable (more favorable to one party) and it will construe ambiguities against the draftsman, in this case Massage Envy. If the terms of the contract are not clear about cancellation, the court will hold that the contract is not enforceable. This contract is something that can definitely be fought in court, and it is likely that there will be a positive outcome for the customer. I see the same complaint over and over, "I was not told about the cancellation" "I did not see the terms". Massage Envy is being misleading, and this is the type of cases the court loves, courts want to look out for customers and want to put a stop to big companies like Massage Envy, and their "Membership contract".

I had a horrific experience as well. The atmosphere is completely unprofessional and more interested obtaining customer's money than customer satisfaction. They rely on the contract to ensure money will continue into the business. If this company did not use contracts it would have gone out of business a long time ago. How much you want to be there are people locked in to their contracts that would prefer another...OUT!

Massage Envy is absolutely misleading as well as rude. Their contract is non-negotiable at any point after the first 3 days. I tried to cancel my membership 1 week after signing up after experiencing 2 terrible massages. The manager was unwilling to cancel my membership, and only had to offer names of other therapists as a resolution. After explaining that it was not my wish to continue on, he basically told me that I have no other choice. Now I'm stuck going for massage at a uncomfortable, unprofessional (on many levels) facility.
Buyer beware. Do not waste your time or money on massage envy.

Massage Envy bad business practices

I've had a membership for around 4 years and frankly most of the massages have been mediocre, then when you find someone good, the next time they're no longer there or you can't get an appointment when wanted. My last massage was canceled due to the massage therapist hurting herself and they didn't have another one to fill in...typical of them. Then, my debit card got lost, so I changed it and forgot that Massage Envy takes money out, so the day after I was to "pay" they left a threatening phone call on my voicemail stating my membership was suspended due to nonpayment, you must call immediately, or we will cancel your appointment. It was a really rude tone. I called told them I was offended by the voicemail and someone different told me I could handle it tomorrow when I came in for my scheduled massage. That night I got a call from a manager who told me she had to have my credit card over the phone or my massage would be canceled. I was totally irked because I already have probably 10 massages in the bank that I had not used. So until I gave her my credit card over the phone, I could not get my account "unsuspended". She also said she could not cancel my account until it was "current". She said I had to pay the $49 before she could cancel my account. Then after paying that $49, they would give me like 30 days to use up my 10 or so massages I had in the bank. So either way I lose. I decide because she was not trying to satisfy me, I was so mad, I said I'm not paying you another cent. Then she said just so you know, we will turn in to collection...threat, threat, threat.

They (same location) won't let me cancel my contract unless they get a Rx note stating my condition. Federal Law gives me a right to privacy of my medical records. They can't ask me for this to cancel a contract. I am not giving my medical information to a private company!

Massage Envy bad business practices

I bought 5 gift cards at Massage Envy for my family and friends. They were running a special that entitled the bearer of the gift card to a massage for $50.00 including tip. When my daughter went to get her massage the Newton MA office told that that because she had been there before her massage was $79.00! and that she had to pony up the difference or join their membership!

This is bad and deceptive business practices. Macy's does not charge me more because I have shopped there in the past.

I would not recommend using this business for any reason. This is the second time I have had issues with them. I guess I should have learned something after the first tine!

I gues I'm going to be at this all day...The issue may have been the the $49 rate is a 1 time intro rate, if they have visited any Massage Envy within 6 months they are no longer elligable for the intro rate. The person selling you the GC shold have asked and checked if they have ever been in before, sounds like they didn't..again demand some resolution but please do not trash all Privately owned clinics because of the actions of one. Massage Envy beware and stay away

I purchased a Massage Envy Christmas gift card for a friend. Soon after (within 3 days) I asked for a refund, and was told only at that time that they had a "no refund policy on gift cards". At no time prior to this was I informed of their policy. It wasn't posted at the clinic where I bought the gift card and it wasn't even noted on my receit. I think it's poor business ethics to have a policy like that unless the customer is clearly informed at the time of purchase. The company doesn't seem to answer emails, either. Beware Massage Envy!

Most places have a no-refund policy on gift certificates/cards. (If the company is decent, though, they'll let you transfer it to someone else so that someone can get some benefit from it.) When in doubt, assume that you can't get your money back. Also, even when you doubt you'll be making a return on the purchase, ALWAYS ask about their return/refund policy. Smart companies will state their return policy on the receipt.

I have a massage I thought I was going to be lite on fire for the pain this woman was inflected in my body. She was pushing her feet against the wall and hurt me like crazy. That was a not DEEP tissue request with less than a little of oil on my body.
Forget this place .
Pay full price on a decent massage therapy.

Massage Envy unethical service

Whether the non-member rate is less than what most spas charge is not the point. The point is that when you call Massage Envy they tell you you'll be charged one rate. It is only after you come out of your massage that they explain to you how their membership-based service really works. In the end, I paid what is probably a fair price for a one hour massage, but I am still extremely annoyed because the only reason I schedule an appointment with them was because of the rate I was given. It is EXTREMELY unethical for a business to operate this way and I will never give them my business again or recommend them to everyone. I will do exactly the opposite and tell everyone how terrible their business model is.

Massage Envy jobs

Do not work for them or sign up with them. The owner of this one-who owns Needham, Dedham, and Norwell- and the manager both are dishonerable and untrust worthy. I worked for them for a while.
I have heard repeated complaints about over charging with billing, not honoring membership cancellations and freezes. ME in Needham constantly makes errors in it's paperwork, and refuses to correct it. They will not protect client confidentiality either. They have the therapists tell treatments and other client info at the front desk where anyone can hear it. In fact, they are written up if they don't.
Therapists were always called 'unreliable' when they had the flu. One therapist had documentation of H1N1 from her doctor, and was fired for not being reliable. She had the worst flu scince the Spanish flu, stayed home to keep from infecting others, and was fired for it.
One front desk person was fired for "sexual harrasment" against a gal at the front desk. He was wicked gay. A true homosexual. No way anyone believes that. No investigation or proof. I heard him ask for an investigation, but the manager said "no". But he beat the manager in sales and work ethic, so he was fired. And I heard the manager to call and tell other Massage Envy's not to hire him. illegal I thought, and to spread a lie like that!
These three massage envys are owned and operated by the lowest of the low. Do not give them your business.

i used to work for them too. (Northgate Massage Envy in Seattle WA). they do NOT care about their employee. all they care about is their profit and benefit...thats it... they pay only 15 dollars per client plus if it no show u dont get paid. they would love u to work all day long and they don't even care whether u r tired or NOT. plus they have this massage for CANCER thing and they get lots of clients. even if u work over time, u get paid $15 only that's it. the rate will be the same. they wish if they pay $10 per client. that's how they r cruel to their employee. u just sit and waste ur time. i do NOT recomend for anybody to work for massage envy. they are devil.

I completely agree with your statement. I work for this company and I can't wait to get out. How this company treats their clients and their employers is unethical. I will be calling the Department of Labor tomorrow about this. We had a client a while back who was drunk out of her mind and urinated all over the table and in the trash can. Massage envy's response, they threw away the sheets and didn't say a word to that client. They are letting her come back. That is disturbing. And what is so sad about this situation, they let the client drive away! They didn't stop her, or call a cab. THEY LET HER DRIVE DRUNK. All for the $49.00 that they made and they will continually make off of this person. I probably went against a HIPPA law but the front dest people do it all the time. So whats one more?! They (as in the front desk) openly discuss the clients issues right in front of everyone (while there are customers standing at the front desk checking in or out), on top of that, they tell me how to do my job.

Second complaint. As a therapist working there, if we don't have clients, they expect us to sit there and wait for a potential walk in. But wait a minute...they don't pay us for sitting there. We only get paid for the massages that we do. We have therapists sitting all day for a 1 hr, 5 hours after they got to work. They don't call us to tell us that we don't have to come in until that time. They make us drive there, sit and wait. We don't get WIFI in the break room, so we can't outside work. However, when the front desk people aren't busy they are always on the internet playing games or chatting with friends. How can they make a sale when they aren't working...better yet, they get paid to play these games. Do you see whats wrong with this picture?

They treat their employees like crap (sounding kiddish.) I know a therapist that was requested 95% for one month, no one said congrats, or nice work. They gave this therapist a $5.00 gift card to a grocery store. There is another therapist that reach 1000 massages, they gave that therapist a $10.00 gift card. Don't even get me started on pay raises. .25 cents for each of the following (but this is after you reach 1000 massages) : 2hr massage (which clients expect you to give a 2hr DT), pre-natal, hot stone or if you work a 3/6 or a 4/7. (which means for every 3 or 4 hrs of massage you get a 1 hr break) Do I need to say anymore?

I found a number for their corporate office, however, I don't know if it's reliable. Because, according to our assistant manager corporate makes it impossible for people to contact them. And now, I see why. They don't want to hear all the complaints. It would drive them insane.

Massage Envy fraud

My wife and I have memberships at the River Oaks Massage Envy in Houston, Tx. I have had 2 or 3 prepaids used by a customer in their store in Plymouth Minnesota and have been unable to have the problem corrected.
I wanted to cancel my membership and have all prepaids on my wife's account and those taken from me on my account credited to my credit card. If this is not done within 30 days I will file a fraud claim against the company.
I was charged for the visit even though I had prepays due me. the store in Schertz, tx said someone in Plymouth Minnesota has used my prepays and I would have to work it out with my member store in River Oaks in Houston. No one seems to want to help me and I believe you are running a fraudulent activity. The owner of the Schertz store threatened me and the River Oaks location won't call me. I want to cancel my agreement and I want you to refund my fees.
The store redunded my charge but then they expired my other prepaids.
This company is a big rip-off!

I sent them a doctor's report that I cannot have massages any more but they still do not want to cancel my membership and it has been over a month now. No repose at all... I am stunned that this is a legitimate business...!

I'm telling you, everyone needs to start reporting this place to the Better Business Bureau. I just reported mine and they have been sent my complaint and have 2 weeks to correct it. I thought this was very helpful considering the fact that it is impossible to find contact information for complaints and the locals are apparently mentally deficient.

Our clinic refutes client's claim of unwillingness to assist him in the remedy of the situation, our clinic also refutes the allegations of fraudulent activity, and our clinic refutes the allegations that he was threatened.

Our clinic assisted client by contacting the home clinic involved in the mistake over 5 times in 2 days. Client contacted us several times, three which are documented, taking out his frustrations abusively on our clinic staff over the phone, yelling and alleging fraud, although our staff could not resolve the issue but did all we could to get the matter resolved by the parties that did have that ability.

Human error, not fraud, is to blame for the regrettable mix-up in clients membership massages being used at a third clinic (both clients had the same name and were from the same town). Membership massages were restored to his account by the home clinic. Our clinic refunded the charge from the day he did not have the membership massage available. Due to his abusive treatment of home clinic staff, client was released from his contract as it appeared in both clinic and client's best interests to sever the relationship. The membership dues and massages associated with those payments are not credited back to a member's credit card if they are unused, per the wellness agreement. As with anything, exceptions are solely at the discretion of the clinic which controls the membership--the home clinic. The expiration of membership massages after cancellation is standard, and covered within the boundaries of client's contract. The expiration dates particular to client's situation were explained to him by the home clinic, so that he would have opportunity to enjoy any remaining prior to that expiration.

Client was never threatened by anyone on our staff, despite his volatile, belligerent behavior on the phone on several different occasions with multiple staff members. Because of his dissatisfaction with our clinic, and our inability to accommodate his last-minute request for an appointment as we were fully scheduled, he was encouraged to try a different area clinic to receive massage therapy. Our clinic offered to provide the number or contact them ourselves, so that he might enjoy his massages before their expiration, which client angrily declined.

At our clinic, we pride ourselves on taking care of our clients, and we did the very best we could do for this client as we had no jurisdiction to provide the remedy ourselves, but pursued resolution for the client diligently just the same. Allegations of fraud and threats to our clients are untrue.

Massage Envy professionalism

I have a Massage Envy contract. I have been going for the last 6 months or so. Overall, it has been a wonderful and relaxing experience. I have had 2 or 3 issues regarding my appointment times and assigned therapist. My concerns were readily addressed. However, most recently I had a massage. My massage started late which I easily dismissed: perhaps a client prior to my time was late, with the Holiday Season the traffic has been overwhelming or perhaps it was something else entirely, so be it. My massage started 15 minutes later than scheduled. My therapist honored my hour massage which I was grateful for. However, about 5 minutes before my massage ended someone started knocking on the door and did this more than once. Then in the room next to mine loud banging began. Finally, when I came out of the room another therapist barely gave me enough room to get out while trying to get in the room for the next appointment. This type of behavior I found unprofessional and did not provided a healing environment. I then went to sign out only to find one of the woman at the check out desk difficult to approach. When requested to check out as usual the person expressed that they did not know how to check out that way. I expressed that the other person knew and I would wait to check out. When the other person assisted me, I offered to the person whom did not know the way that I requested to be checked out, to take the opportunity to learn (I thought for future reference). The woman dismissed me: she said no, did not look at me and tossed a file to the side. I understand from the above experience that mostly everyone is trying to do there job however as the customer I felt that I was lost with the frustration experienced by the employees. This experience. in it self gives me great concern for renewing another contract with Massage Envy, when that time comes. I was very opened minded in the beginning because of the great prices, flexibility and professionalism. However, historically I have always supported local services in the community. This experience has definitely given food for thought when that time comes!

ME is simply a cattle call. Clients are supposed to be processed in an hour or less start to finish. This process includes greeting you, walking you to the room, discussing your needs, waiting while you undress and dress again, and walking you out. The massage is somewhere in between. I agree that was a bad experience, but it is likely to happen again.

Massage Envy deceitful contracts

It's sad when your business model is based solely on deceitful marketing techniques. I was subject to the same "6-month" contract that continued to auto-bill me every month, and after cancelling membership, I was charged $10 each to convert 9 unused sessions to "complementary cards"...that are only good at that store, and only for 8 weeks! Why should something that I've paid for expire in less than 2 month's time?! If you provide a good, cost-effective service, business will take care of itself... there's no need to trap people with deceptive tricks. Shame on Massage Envy's marketers and legal eagles who came up with this rubbish. Needless to say, after using my "complementary cards", I will not be using their services any longer - while I recommend to anyone who asks...DON'T GO THERE!

all i can say is "bad business" practices. i signed up for the monthly service and had to cancel due to a hectic travel schedule, in the mean time though i had five months of unused massages. i was informed that i could cancel but only have 30 days to use
the five massages. tacky. they can win the battle but not the war! buyer beware.

The contract that Massage Envy uses is called a Contract of Adhesion in Contracts Law. When this contracts are argued in court, it is likely that the judge will hold for the plaintiff (in this case the customer). In most cases, the court will refuse to enforce terms that it finds unconscionable (more favorable to one party) and it will construe ambiguities against the draftsman, in this case Massage Envy. If the terms of the contract are not clear about cancellation, the court will hold that the contract is not enforceable. This contract is something that can definitely be fought in court, and it is likely that there will be a positive outcome for the customer. I see the same complaint over and over, "I was not told about the cancellation" "I did not see the terms". Massage Envy is being misleading, and this is the type of cases the court loves, courts want to look out for customers and want to put a stop to big companies like Massage Envy, and their "Membership contract".

Massage Envy buyer beware

Boycott Massage Envy on Florin Rd, Manager Alysa

I signed a contract with Massage Envy 2008 in September I moved 112 miles away to Central California so I called them in November and cancelled my contract. Six months later they debit my credit card 59.00. I contacted them to advise them of the situation and they claim that my account was put on hold for six months. I advise the manager Alysa to credit my card back the 59.00 she refused. I contacted my attorney service they sent a letter and Alysa still refuse stating to cancel it would cost me a extra 100.00 its writen in my contract. My attorney looked at the contract and found it is not written in the contract. So Alysa lied. Now I will contact the attorney general, it is that serious to me. What if other businesses debit your account like that. That add up!

I did read my contract. I gave them 30 days written notice almost 2 years AFTER the initial lock in period. The term states "You may cancel this membership during the renewal term (the period after the initial year) of the membership upon 30 day advance written notice the Massage Envy clinic at which your membership originated." Both in the written notice and over the phone I told them I had not used any services not paid for and my membership dues were up to date so there was no fees owed. They still charged me for another month because I did not use "their form" to provide written notice.

Thank you for the suggestion to present this complaint to the Attorney General. I will look into that. I will file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as well.

Massage Envy services received insufficient

I went for the introductory $39 price for a one-hour massage (actually only 50 minutes, which is explained in small print). I was happy with it and signed up for a membership with my relatives.

I wanted to try their other massages, originally thinking I'd get the member rates and they would be the same (i.e. $39 for 1 hour massage; $57 for 1.5 hour massage; $78 for 2 hour massage [minus 10 minutes for disrobing, re-robing, and discussion with massage therapist]). Turns out that only the Swedish massage are those rates. The other massages, including the hot stone massages, are charged at different rates (even though nothing in any of the brochures say that).

For example, a deep tissue massage for 1 hour (really 50 minutes) will cost you the 1.5 hours massage rate. The hot stone therapy massage for 1.5 hours (really 80 minutes) will cost you the 2.0 hours massage rate. When I asked originally how long the massage was for the hot stone therapy, I was told 90 minutes. Well, I received only 80 minutes and when I went to complain, they apologized for "my misunderstanding." Um, I didn't misunderstand anything. I specifically asked how long the MASSAGE was, not how long the "session" was. They tried to palm it off on "session" versus "massage" and didn't offer anything to make me happy (not a discount on the massage since I didn't get what I contracted for, or anything).

Well, a complaint to the Better Business Bureau is in order. I also do in-between massages (well, I did for the last 2 months) but won't be doing that anymore, at least at Massage Envy. I found another massage / day spa that offers 60 minute massages (a real 60 minutes, rather than 50 minutes, at least that's what they tell me) for only $45. Throw in a real 60 minute facial and both together = $80. I will try that one out (Time 2 Relax Day Spa in Norco, CA) and see if it turns out okay.

Any place that tries to lock you in at a special rate and has so many caveats is a true scam. I would avoid Massage Envy at all costs. It's almost as if they're trying to pass off their services as "luxury for the poor man." well, no thank you. I'd rather pay $20 more per visit and have the flexibility to pay as I go. Most importantly, I want to avoid the creepy "time share property" type of environment.

Massage Envy contract

I went in to Massage Envy on Greenville Ave., and they offered a year long contract that you could cancel anytime. It came with a free massage, so I signed the contract. After 3 months of not using the service and paying, I called and tried to cancel. They said that I had to come into the store to cancel. So I went into the store and they said the contract was for a year and there was nothing I could do about it. They told me I could cancel anytime. I wasnt even asking for my money back. Now Anderson, Crenshaw and Associate lawers are trying to collect over $600. I had one massage! This is fraud and I am going to fight it!

Company does not explain or advise about their service contract which is in force for one year. Regardless of service or satisfaction there is no leeway in contract. Will not let family member utilize service. It appears they expect dis-satisfaction with their contract wording.

Seriously. They didn't say anytime. You just wanted to hear that. If you read the fine print that you signed, it says that after your term is complete you may cancel within a 30 day written notice. And yeah, if you don't pay a monthly basis of what you AGREED to do, they're sending you to collections. Count on it. Maybe you should have read over the contract before signing. Fraud, BBB, or anyone else you go to won't do anything. You signed. Have fun!

Massage Envy managerial corruption/sexual harassment

I've worked with Massage Envy and thought it would be a good way to bring professional massage to Oklahoma City. When i first started, they seemed very knowledgeable about how to run a normal clinic, but as time went on, it became very clear that they ("they" being management and a select few "therapist") really don't care about real massage therapy practice or the code of ethics we are to follow. While the clinic seems to be doing well fiancially and it presents itself as a caring company, the therapists that work there have not been treated with the same kindness. I like to point out that if you have a complaint you wish to file about Massage Envy, there is no such place you can do that at their website and if you attempt to call their home office number, you will be strung along with empty "we'll get right on that" speeches or just hang up on you while you wait.

The two people that cause most the trouble are Lila Burns (Manager) and Charles Overstreet (Therapist, but not certified). Like most of the complaints with Massage Envy on this website involving terrible business practice, this centers around the unethical actions of fake therapist(s) and the manager(s) who turn a blind eye what is happening. Many other therapists (myself included) have done couples massages at the clinic with Charles. Not only does he not follow proper drapping procedures, he intentionally exposes private areas of the client's body so he can do "more detailed work". To go with that, he also says things to clients that (whether you are a therapist or not) sound completely wrong. If I'm getting a massage from a male massage therapist and I hear "I'll make you feel real good" or "can i pull down your underwear a little", I would completely loose it! Plus he seems to always want to do some "massage therapy" along the lower back/gluteal region, at least when I've worked with him.

And yes, I and many (if not, most) of the other therapist have gone to management with this problem, but it has done nothing. Lila refuses to question Charles on his actions and has not called in a auditor to verify his "professionalism". The reasoning behind that is he works on a good deal of clients that come into the clinic, many of which are old clients from his previous jobs, which brings more money into the clinic. I don't care if a massage therapist brings in $5, 000 everyday they come to work--if you are doing anything illegal to a client, in or out of the clinic, you not only need to loose your job but also should face criminal charges. I can not count the number of times I've heard fellow therapists say they went to Lila with this problem and told she "would look into it" or that "Oh thats just Charles. He likes the ladies" (Thats a failed attempt at humor-I don't find the funny in that at all). I've also been told that because he was one of the one that originally started with ME back in October 08, he has more senority than other therapists and if anyone ever made a open claim like this against him, then that person would be the one to get fired (either Lila Burns or Steve Long-Main ME Manager of OKC--said that). It seems that you can get away with whatever you want at the Massage Envy here, so long as you have managers who has no real training in massage and just doesn't care what it really stands for--as long as you make them money.

Bottom Line: As a therapist of any profession, you know damn well what you are doing when you go back in that clinic room with a complete stranger waiting for you, asking for help. As far as Massage Therapy is concerned, if you can't do that, then all you really are is "TheRapist"... which is all you amount to.

I just recently got fired from massage envy after working there for 2 months. I really liked my job for the most part, however..if you are a sales associate, you don't get a lunch break, you HAVE to eat at the front desk (unprofessional), and if something important comes up like a dr. Appointment, you have to bring a dr.'s note (is this high school?)..I got a really Important call one day before work.. I needed to get off work on Saturday, and I got my important call on a Wednesday. I talked to my manager and, althought there were five people working Saturday (and only 3 computers), she wouldn't allow me off unless I found someone to cover my shift. I called around for almost 2 days and no one could cover. They had PLENTY of people to work. Might I add that I hadn't missed any days at all. I told her how important this was to me and she said "either you show up or you can turn in your key". So after giving me this ultimatum, I told her I could do it, so she had NO PROBLEM with letting me finish my 8 hour work day, then sent a "key collector " at 10 pm because I guess I wasn't trustworthy enough to close down the building? I thought that as bosses f a company, they would be understanding and treat employees with the same integrity as clients.Anyways, I loved the people I worked with at the front desk. But they are for sure lacking management wise.

I feel it is absolutely reprehensible that anyone is able to post a persons first and last name and not have to post there own name. That is a true indication in my opinion that this is a fabrication from a disgruntled former employee. This post should be taken with the tiniest grain of salt. I feel if you are willing to accuse someone you should have enough courage to post your name. Shame on you.

My name is Steve Long and I am the owner of the above mentioned clinic. Massage Envy has a very strict policy regarding inappropriate touch which I follow to the letter. I have fired therapists due to a single client complaint and will continue to do so when warranted. As far as I know, the above was submitted by my competition, therefore I cannot fire a therapist based on just this. Charles is licensed, has worked for me for 15 months and has not had one client complaint regarding sexual misconduct. That being said, I have no problem firing him if you will simply contact me so I can verify you have actually been to the clinic and had a massage from him. I recieved a massage from that same person not long ago! I told him to ONLY massage my back, arms and shoulders and yet he kept trying to run his fingers down the sides and top of my butt--not at any one point did I suggest, hint or ask that he go below my beltline! I left the massage early and complained to the lady at the frontdesk about the massage; she offered to comp my massage, but I have no intention of going back! I did check back a few days ago and found that he is still working there, which means my complaint fell on deaf ears. Plus the author of this post is right--there is no way to post complaints on the Massage Envy website.

I've gone to other Massage Envys and I've enjoyed REAL massage therapy in the past, but that pervert doesn't know the first thing about it. Anyone can give a massage to anyone who is not familiar with massage and THIS is a classic example of someone taking advantage of their position. The most upsetting thing is that no one has done anything about this. I caution anyone who gets a massage there should avoid Charles Overstreet, if he's still not fired!

I feel the same way as you do. Massage Envy as a chain works like a big corporation and because of that it fails to abide the core essence of massage therapist which is to nurture and care clients and not take advantage of them by exposing them with the wrong intention. It says it makes massage therapy affordable. But does it? As a ME massage therapist for 6 months, I couldn't give my clients my best because I was forced to do so many in a row because ME only paid me $15 per massage. I felt angry when a client didn't tip me $15 or more. Later I felt ashamed to feel that way because the reason why I went into massage therapy is to nurture and care for another human being. It was just the worst environment to be your best as a therapist.

Now I feel so strongly against Massage Envy. Yes, it gave me the experience I needed to build my skills but was it worth it? When I would do 7 massages in one day and come home with less than 100 dollars in my pocket I really regretted my decision to become a massage therapist purely on the basis of how I was getting paid. I wish my clients knew how much they were paying me. Then they would leave atleast 25 dollars for tip.

I think it's funny how people on here bash Massage Envy without even listening to themselves about what they are saying.

Point 1) - You're pissed because you are locked in a membership. We'll I'm sorry to tell you that is how Massage Envy runs. The only way that they can make massage affordable is to have a membership program. I would say that you are lucky that you massages roll over month to month because if you had a gym membership and don't use it one month (like most people do) then you are just out that $30 or more dollars.

Point 2) - Putting a credit card on file is has nothing to do with any kind of fraud. It is to ensure that their therapists will get paid for their time if you didn't show up for your appointment. Massage is in the realm of health care and therefore if you need to put a credit card on file at your doctor's office, why shouldn't you for Massage Envy?

Point 3) - As far as crappy massage therapists go, this means you are not asking the right questions when you are booking your appointment and probably are inexperienced with massage. You need to ask questions like, "I want to be with a therapist that has be working over (X amount of years, let's say 5 years) or "I'm having this kind of pain right now, I want really deep (or light) work, which therapist would you recommend?"

I'm sorry, but I have a Massage Envy membership and have been nothing but satisfied. I think everyone on here is just uneducated about the program and you didn't ask enough questions before you signed up. So stop complaining!

Massage Envy is a franchise. In my complaints it is the front desk and whoever manages them or who can't communicate. I was told that there were cameras all over the premises. That includes when you undress and the lighting is brighter than most Day Spas. I have been harrassed on the phone. I have called Massage Envy Corp. office many times and never spoke to a soul. I have truly been HIGHLY dissappointed with Massage Envy and Facelogic ( same company ). It is the mangement and that you know it rolls down from somewhere. Most therapists ( not all ) were great but WOW on the other staff. Never have I heard from the Corporate Office, never. You do get what you pay for. Their prices just went up so stick with a nice day Spa or find a Yoga center. Massage is a healing art and should be felt my both parties as such. I have experienced more stress and immaturity from the front desk than I had to begin with. Oh yes, they have kept so many people's money. Really Tacky. Not sure cameras are legal either. They totally ripped my mom off and we lost our Mother's Day treat because of the Birmingham location. Really, really tacky.

I agree with the original poster. I am a therapist for ME, and although there are things I am not happy about as an employee it seems customers on here complain about every little thing. It is discount massage, it is a membership program like a gym and it is in the healthcare field. People just don't see it that way and see massage as just a luxury and not a necessity to your health. MT's are licensed with the department of health just like a nurse, doctors etc...I agree that the ones complaining are just not educated about the field and don't ask questions. When you sign a contract for something, READ IT! Don't complain when you want to cancel it because you just don't want it anymore and than flip out when you can't. When you buy a car you sign a contract stating you will pay your monthly fees, if you stop paying for your car guess what? It gets repoed! If you don't want to sign a contract to get the extremely discounted rates for massage than don't and when you want a massage, go in a pay the more expensive rates.

CONTRACTS CAN BE BROKEN. JUST BECAUSE YOU SIGNED ONE DOESNT MEAN IT IS ENFORCEABLE, LEGAL, LEGITIMATE, ETHICAL OR WOULD HOLD UP IN COURT. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO FILE A SMALL CLAIMS LAWSUIT, YOU WILL WIN! LOOK UP "CONTRACT OF ADHESION" THE JUDGE ALMOST ALWAYS FAVORS THE PLAINTIF NOT THE UNETHICAL STRONG ARM TACTICS OF THE BUSINESS.

Yeah there are also people out there that think the Nazis are cool, that Al Queda is justified, that CIA is behind 911...and there is this guy defending an obviously corrupt and unethical business model being franchised across the country making million$ using misconception, misleading people, abusing their emplyees/contract laborers, bait and switching, the list goes on and on. The contract is called a contract of adhesion. It is an unethical and unfair contract in contract law it is easily overturned and not enforceable becuase it greatly favors one party of the next. It was my experience that the disgruntled employees were suffereing from mistreatement and fear of losing their pitiful job causes them to lie. I was lied to and mislead on several occasions. Yes ultimately it is our responsibility to not sigh things without reading the fine print...but its sad that we have to be so guarded against organizations liek this out there to scam you of your money with bait and swtich pricing and lame contracts. Their verbal agreements which we take at face value because we are trusting people are total BS. They use all sorts of unscrupulous tactics to keep billing you such as not allowing you to cancel or in my cse they "lost" the cancellation form i submetted and kept charging me, it gets worse...
