My wife purchased a Singtel sim card when we arrived into Singapore Changi Airport on 30 July. The card expired after 28 days when we were still in Malaysia, so we renewed it for another seven days on 28 August. When we returned to Singapore on 30 August, we discovered it did not work. We assumed that the renewal might only apply for use in Malaysia, so we renewed for another seven days for $10 Singapore. However, the data service still did not work. After more than one hour working through tech support including inadvertently calling their tech support 800 number from my US phone and reaching a phone sex line, I got through to a very nice and professional customer service rep who explained that Singapore passed a law preventing use of prepaid SIM cards for non residents for more than 28 days. I asked why they would allow renewing these cards if it was not legal, and there was no good answer. This seems highly unethical and I would like to register a formal complaint with the authorities. The amount of money lost is not the point. The fact that Singtel solicited renewals and charges when it is not legal seems highly unethical. While the customer service rep was very professional and understanding, the behavior of his employer is reprehensible. Singtel is behaving in an unlawful manner and must be called out for this inappropriate legal violation.
Claimed loss: $10 singapore for the illegal renewal charge
Desired outcome: Credit my account back, and discontinuing this practice of charging for service that is not legal to offer.

You’ve highlighted a serious issue with SingTel’s practices, and it’s clear they’ve put you through an unnecessary hassle. Allowing renewals that aren’t even legal is not just frustrating, it’s downright unethical. While the customer service rep was helpful, the bigger issue is SingTel’s misleading behavior. It’s definitely worth taking this up with the authorities — companies shouldn’t be able to get away with these kinds of shady practices. You’re right to call them out on it!
