charging for tax prep that I cannot file
I had H&R block prepare my taxes which they said it would be 9.99 but ended up being over 30 just for my federal then the prepared my state cost me another 40$ and they e filed it with my state which rejected it cause you can't file renters rebate on lne however they tried and now I can't even exile my state at all I called the service 3 days in a row for help the first day I was on hold for 2.5 hrs than I gave up the next day I got someone the told me they had to transfer me and hung up twice then left me on hold again the third time they finally talk to me told me I needed to go to my local H&R block office and made me appointment I went there today and they said there's nothing they could do because now my state taxes are stuck someware in the system and the only way this problem could be fixed is paper file my whole state income taxes which I have to do myself and it could take up to six week or longer before I can get my 3000 refund which I counted on getting them a lot sooner, However it only took them a few minutes to take my payment I feel they owe me everything I paid them and a lot more for all the time I spent trying to get this problem resolved, I plan on sending this complaint to my states consumer complaint agency and the attorney generals office in my state for people like me who has a disabled husband and three kids to support and living pay check to paycheck working two jobs I really need this money to try to get caught up on my bills, what they did was not right at all and I think they need a training course of what you can and can't e file when doing people's taxes! too high fee for full time college student
This morning went to local H&R Block to file my son's taxes, who is a full time out of state college student. Refund of full return of state and fed taxes to sum of $915. The fee for this was $104.00 with a $45 discount that was included, this was rape. This fee was outrageous, full time college student, works during summer and holidays for his money. The young people trying to make something of themselves, with goals and standards get no breaks. I filed a complaint with them...big deal right-they don't care and it proved so in the employees taking the complaints. So the next best thing I can do for this situation as a mom, is sing it from the house top-how sorry this business is...all about the buck! So unless you are getting a big return back or can afford to let them rape you, better find someone else or file yourself.
gross negligence
H&R Block forced the entry of an informational item from our W2 (box DD) that was listed for employer paid contributions to healthcare premiums into our medical expense deduction, substantially overstating our medical expenses TWO tax years in a row. Each year, our approximate increased tax is $12k for each of the two tax year for a total of $24k in tax, not including interest and penalties.
As we were unaware of the tax law, of course we didn't know that this wasn't permitted under the ACA, which our tax preparer specifically said WAS allowed under the new law. Of course, she was wrong.
We have the Peace of Mind guarantee, but this only covers up to $5500/mistake, but - you are actually TAXED on the payment they make to you for this guarantee, which further deprecates it's value. In other words, they might pay me the $5500, but after I pay the taxes on it, it will only be worth $3500.
I plan to file a lawsuit under their E&O insurance as this is an absurd mistake that goes beyond a transposition error, addition error or some software error. This was a blatant disregard of a new tax law for which we relied upon their knowledge.

Makes Mistakes / Doesn't Stand Behind Work: my elderly parents have used this H & R Block office for 15 years. Ive been a customer to H&R block for 6 years, when I get audited right when I receive the paper i instantly take it to H&R Block employees, the paper said that the kids were not related to me my nieces and nephews I provided every bit of proof that there was I provided birth certificates Social security cards and document bills We send it in to the reconsideration apartment. Over the next year I'm in contact with the IRS and H&R block irs kept requesting bits of information here in there. During this time I've met 4 to 5 different H&R Block employees. That's where h&r block break the terms of the agreement, it states in the agreement that I am to have one tax audit professional. So in mean time it seems like I'm getting nowhere with the IRS So then I go 2 one of there headquarters where I have the actual district manager have power of attorney to help me out. I wait for few weeks try to call are back turns out she's on vacation for the next 2 weeks, so I call back in the next 2 weeks to find out that he is been moved to another store. And this has been over 2 years now that I've been dealing with this constant talk with the IRS 2 to 4 hours at a time, I also have to explain it to every new H&R Block employee that I talk to try to help me out with situation taken more and more of my time. So I'll try take on the irs myself and start studying after talking to a lawyer in the irs countless times I come to the conclusion that H&R Block messed up when I sent my documents in, I had 90 days to appeal the audit, and instead for some reason H&R Block employees amended my taxes I never knew with this stuff meant at that time. When I Try to send in for peace of mind claim, they get rejected you guys say I never contacted them within 90 days or 30 days which is not true. Also say that it wasn't there fault based off information you have provided. Which is not true the audit itself may not been either H&R Block or my fault but when H&R Block sent in an amended tax return and didn't appeal the audit screwed me I had 90 days to appeal If i was giving one HR block tax professional this may have been accomplished instead I had to repeat my story over and over to 10 plus employees of H&R Block. It was also mentioned that it was Out of the 3 year deadline for the peace of mind claim, it would not have been if it was not for H&R Block I was in contact with them and irs the entire time. Now the only way I can get my money back from the IRS is if I pay them off completely and then sue them. So are h&r block employees trained to stall the customer 2 where they cannot obtain their peace of mind claim and why was I neglected the help that I needed before all this happened? 12000$ out of my pocket and I have done nothing wrong not one thing.

They are doing me that way also. I been going to them for 13 yrs. now & I get letter from I.R.S 2 YRS. later & I go up their & they just tell me ohhh it will be ok. But yet the I.R.S wants that money back & H&R block is suppose to be the tax experts. I pay alot to have my taxes done right. Some thing needs be done about these people ripping off us honest tax payers.
wrong information
Told me I was getting a tax return confirmed my account details and told me I would have to wait about 3 weeks for the money, 2weeks later I received a bill from ATO all I got was a sorry he must not have had he's glasses on. I feel a refund of what I paid them should have been offered. I earnt to much from centerlink and work combined and no tax was being taken from my centerlink payment. After numerous phone calls to ato I booked an appointment with an account who told me exactly what I need to do to ensure this doesnt happen next year. I spoke to someone different at h & r block then the man who mislead me and he never called me to explain or apologise or give guidence on what to do next
filed wrong information on taxes
I went to H&R Block so my taxes would be done right since I had taxes in two different states. It has taken over 2 months to get all my state back from Oklahoma because they didn't send the correct paperwork. I call the tax people today and they told me I only get $175 back when h and r block told me I would get $702 back. The reason for this is because h and r block filed as me being in the state of oklahoma the whole year when I wasn't. And all h and r block will do to fix this is give me a $50 gift card for their services next year. I paid almost $300 to have my taxes done right and they screwed them up and only offered me $50 for their mistake. I won't be going back and anyone who talks to me about them I will strongly recommend them going somewhere. Don't waste you time with them.

forgot to mention the fees
I hardly write reviews on anything because I can usually find the pros and cons in everything and accept them. This, however, really got to me. Never will I get an Emerald Card again. The HR Block guy told me it was a quicker way to get my money than having a check sent to my house. Also I would be able to get my money out when I needed to with no fees. So, I accepted his offer and got screwed. If you go through these "no fee" banks that the card says to go through, you'll get feed. It's a $1 fee just to check your amount. When I called the banker to tell him I wanted the money taken out and put into my personal bank account he said "That's not an easy process. It'll take months and require a lot of paper information." He just insisted that I pay the fees for taking my money out through an ATM machine or accept cash back at Walmart. Also HR Block guys wont help. They know absolutely nothing. This whole experience is pathetic. Its my money and I don't have access to do what I want with it. Stop holding my money hostage! I do not want to go through your c****y bank!
2012 tax return
I have had my taxes prepared at h&r block for the last several years. I will definitely not be giving them my money in the future. I received a letter from the IRS stating that I did not turn in a form with my 2012 taxes and I owed $1043. My fiancé took the letter to the office I had my taxes done at and showed it to one of the employees there. The employee...

my emerald card was put on hold-stopped all transactions. saying something about fraud. i have tried to get answers with no luck. they say the bank will get ahold of me. they wont tell why or what happened for them to do this or think there is a problem. there was no problem this morning when i used it then this evening went to use it and it was declined. i just want my money screw the card. the people i have spoken to act like the bank is this special place they cant give me a phone number or a person who i can call to resolve this. i also was told it can take 3 to 7 business days to fix it better yet when the bank decides to talk to me-call me. this is unimaginable. especially this is all the money you have and are relying on your refund

I files my taxes yesterday with h&r block . When I got home I looked over the paper work they charged me $325.00 for filing my taxes. I was never made aware of how much the fees were or given the option the pay for the fees upfront. I got charged another $35.00 for them to take the fees out of my refund. No its on my credit that I owe hr block money but imnot paying for something that they messed up and now the lady dpoesnt evin work there. I want this off my credit please!
price
I have been going to H&R Block for my tax preparations for 5 years now and have to say this will be my last year. I cannot justify your company charging me $600+ for 1 1/2 hours of work. I do realize that my taxes are more involved than some peoples but the amount of money I was charged this year is inexcusable. We have to itemize a lot on our taxes due to my husband working and living out of town for 5 out of 7 days of the week but how is it possible that I itemized a whole year on our 2011 taxes and only 5 months of the year on our 2012 taxes yet it cost me $100 more to do my taxes this year. This is inexcusable to be charged this much to do anyone's taxes and it will be the last year that that your company will be getting our business. There are cheaper places and also some tax places that offer my husband a veterans discount that your company won't do. This is one loyal customer that you all have lost and I tell all my friends and family not to go either because the price you charge is outrageous.

The connection you try to make between the cost and the length of time it took to
prepare your taxes is invalid. I have watched new preparers take 2.5 hours to do what
I consider 30 minute returns. The fact that your husband worked only 5 months is
also irrelevant. If you had the same types of expenses from 2011 to 2012 then your return required the same forms. The amount that was entered was not relevant. On the other hand, the fact that you paid $100 more from 2011 to 2012 for the preparation is of some concern. I would want to verify that the exact same forms were used and if that turned out to be the case, then you have a legit complaint. Maybe you should try a CPA firm next year, then get back to us on how much they charged or go for a mom and pop shop and pray you do not get audited. Good Luck!
rip off
We went to the local H & R Block to do our taxes, after being charged 350 last year, I sold a house and decided to use them this year. It cost us over 600 dollars this year. They couldn't finish our taxes because they messed up on the form and the computer wouldn't let them send it. I was told to come back in a few hours, that they would get a hold of someone to get it fixed. The one in charge in another office was gone to a ballgame and couldn't be reached. I was told it would be Monday before she could come down and fix my taxes. I think it is a rip off to cost so much to do your taxes, they don't tell you up front what it will cost. I will Never Use them again, nor will I ever recommend them to anyone.

not doing their job correctly
My grandmother went into H and R block to do her taxes for 2011 and the man there didn't let us know the payment options knowing she is on a fixed income, then I called and ask how we can go about having it taken out and then give he the rest of the money, well we go to the office and it was to late, they didn't let me know on the phone the deadline. she...

I have done my taxes for years. No issues. My boyfriend wanted me to start taking my taxes to who he uses for his so I agreed. Prior to going I ran my taxes through Turbo Tax without actually filing in order to make sure H&R Block was giving me a correct amount. We got the same amount to the dollar for both state and federal taxes except turbo tax cost me $90 and H & R Block cost me $445! I was blown away. My return is so simple and yet they charged me more than 4x what Turbo tax would charge for the EXACT same Refund. You got me this year H &R but NEVER AGAIN! Talk about highway robbery!
Turbo Tax is a great program, if you know what you are doing. Sadly, most Turbo Tax returns I see are post IRS audit, and the taxpayer is owing hundreds if not thousands
of dollars. I am curious why you did not gather up your documents and leave once you saw the price H&R Block was going to charge you. Did they tell you that you had to pay it. or else?
up front price guarantee
An ad on the TV and radio stated H&R Block had an upfront price guarantee. I never used them before, so I thought, well, if it's too high, I'll just walk out. I guess I should have checked for the fine print. I'm thinking not all offices participate in this guarantee. I met with a person @ H&R block. I asked her the pricing. She pointed to a paper on the corner of her desk that said it could range from $100 to $400. Now, that's not a guarantee. I pushed the issue and said can't you narrow that down to a more exact #. She said, well lets just put your information in an see. I'm not sure how they determine how much to charge. At the end of the 1 1/2 hours I spent there, then she said it will be $310. Wow. had I known that I would have walked out immediately. Then, when I went to leave, (because I needed to get more info to complete them) they held my W-2s as ransom to be sure I came back. I will NEVER NEVER EVER use there services again. Who has $300 to just throw away. I think this is false advertising and someone needs to fix this.

no usb ports??
I worked really hard on typing up my taxes and my printer wasn't working at the time, so I saved it on a usb. I arrived and was informed that h & r block has blocked all their usb ports. Then I was told I can drive a few miles and print it out at a printer shop. What an inconvenience! I understand the threat of viruses but they can easily download a virus scanner for almost no cost and still be safe and more customer friendly.
They just lost a client!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
It's a bit extreme to say you'll never use them again, don't you think? Sure, they could buy a virus scanner and I'm sure they already have one (perhaps more than one), but new viruses and malware come out all the time; how do they know you don't have a virus or some other malicious software (such as a keylogger, which records every single keystroke made on the computer) on your USB? I'm sure they also do it to keep unscrupulous employees from downloading and saving private financial data of their customers to flash drives of their own.
All I'm saying is, think reasonably. Sure, it's a hassle to have to go out of your way to print out your files and then drive back, but do you really want to give your private, confidential information to a company that's lackadaisical about the security of the computers they use to process said info? Didn't think so.
investigating class action concerning form 8863 education tax credit errors and ommissions
The law firm of Berger & Montague, P.C., located in Philadelphia PA, is currently investigating a possible class action suit against H&R Block Inc. in connection with H&R Block’s announcement of the delay of refunds for tax returns that included a Form 8863, which allows a taxpayer to reclaim 100% of the first $2, 000 in eligible student expenses and 25% of each dollar of eligible student expenses thereafter.
Previously the eligibility line of Form 8863 could be left blank and still indicate to the IRS that the taxpayer qualified for the student tax credit. Starting with the 2012 tax year, the IRS began to require that an “n” be entered in the eligibility line to indicate qualification. However, Form 8863 in H&R Block’s tax software continued to permit the line to be left blank, which has resulted in the delay of thousands of refunds.

fees, and more
My adult son had me do his federal tax as I do it every year for him using a online tax service. I couldn't do his state taxes since he had lived in several different states the past year. He went to H & R Block to have his out of state taxes filed. The person there only filed for 2 different states and told him either he didn't live in the other states long enough or some other nonsense. My ire came up when they charged him a total of $150.00 to do 2 different state taxes and then tell him he will be getting only $89.00 back. If I had been there I would have told them to shove it and walked out. They have a sign in the front of the store saying "State Taxes $39.00" Even assuming they charged him for both returns the doesn't come near the fee they charged. I called the 800 number and 4 days later they called back, bottom line they don't care and will not do anything. He should have spoken to the local manager at the time of the incident I was told. One thing for sure they will NEVER get a recommendation from me
You said you son is an adult, yet you seem to want to treat him like he is still a child.
Instead of doing his taxes for him, maybe you could teach him how to do them himself.
Every state that has individual income taxes has a website where you can download the
directions. Good Luck!
