I have the same complaint, same UPC#...They taste like insectiside of something. I ate about 10 of them in my chili last night, woke up in a sweat, turned on AC and went back to bed...Today my children all complained about them, and I tasted seperately from any other food...They Smell and taste horrible, also burn my throat some...just drank milk to dilute and rinse...?
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Almost vomited from the toxic fumes and taste after just one cracker. Did some investigation seems they are using plastic paper linings from repurposed plastic bottles. Sometimes "green" is just the color of your face after eating a cracker!
Well are you okay?
I just got a box of the smelly crackers. I was having them in my chili and didn't figure it out until I ate one already. I smelled the package and they reek. Date on the box is 23 Dec '09 with the same UPC# [protected] 8. Has anyone found out what the cause is?
Were you okay?
I just opened a pack tonight and still cant get the smell out of the house and am getting a headache...put crackers in the trash can outside. I dont have the box they came in.
My twin sister was just really sick for the past 2 days after eating Saltines! She was stuffy from a sinus/allergy attack, so she didn’t smell the terrible chemical smell from the Saltines until 1.5 days later (& countless trips to toilet to vomit!)& thought maybe she caught some terrible virus or was horribly ill. But after the Claritin kicked in, she wasn’t stuffy anymore, & when she went to have more saltines for her upset stomach, the smell/toxicity was obvious! Horrible! We are big fans of Saltines :-(
Email I sent to the FDA Feb 8, 2010
Subject: Contamination of Nabisco Original Premium Saltine Crackers
I just opened a package of Nabisco Original Premium Saltine Crackers
(27DEC09AH102) from a 1 pound box, took a bite of one cracker, began to chew and tasted something that was not food, my tongue immediately started to burn so I spit the food out into a trash can. Decided to smell the package I had just opened and was met with an extremely strong chemical/pesticide scent. Became ill within 15 minutes, triggered the gag reflex to void the contents of my stomach even though I didn't swallow any of the cracker that I am aware of. Then had abdominal cramps and an odd tingling sensation up my neck and across my head. Have not been able the clear the metallic taste from my palate for three hours.
My family and I have consumed most of one of the four packages from the box in the previous month. There was no odor or bad taste. Have remaining contents of box. Two unopened packages and the package that is contaminated with one cracker missing.

Never called the number ... figure there would be more bureaucracy
My husband just made some soup for the family lunch and pulled out a box of saltine crackers we've had for a while. My son told me they weren't right and asked me to taste one. I just about said "No, just eat them...they're probably a little stale" but I decided to taste it. OMG this is one of the worst taste/smells I could imagine! I felt so ill and was gagging and nearly got sick. Yes, I checked the date and they are outdated but not by a ridiculous amount of time. They are just crackers! What could you possibly do to crackers that would make them so disgusting?! I smelled the package- same smell. What were they thinking? I won't buy them again...whether or not this issue has been taken care of.
My 18 month old just ate a saltine that I just discovered smells like chemicals. I'm a bit paniced - should I call poison control?
Was she okay?
The UPC# on the box is the same as the one above ( UPC# [protected] ). What ended up happening? Did you get them tested for toxicity?

Teddy Grahams have a terrible chemical taste too! Dont let your kids eat them. Somethings wrong.
Bought Teddy Grahams for my daughter tonight and popped one in my mouth. I'm a painter and they taste and smell like oil based varnish or shellac poured all over them! Terrible tasting to say the least. I spit the cookie out and grabbed the cookies out of my 3 year old daughters hands before she ate any. The cookies have the odor inside the sealed bag and the odor's so strong the cardboard box has absorbed this toxic smell too! This product is geared for children! Imagine all the kids that are eating these possibly poisonous cookies and parents dont even know if they dont eat one first. SCARY!
April 3, 2012 My husband and I opened a 1 lb box of Premium Saltines (Nabisko), crumbled into our soup, didn't realize anything out of the ordinary... until we took a bite...the taste was like a strong chemical. Didn't think we had actually swallowed anything, but maybe crumbs since spitting it out. Within minutes, stomach cramps.
Were y’all okay, any vomiting or diarrhea?
Cause I ate a full one that tasted okay, and I’m worried...
I bought a bag of Teddy Grahams from a convenient store. I opened them inside my car and noticed an odd odor. I tasted one before passing the bag to my 3 year old... and then took the bag quickly away from him. They taste horrorible and thier is something wrong with these. My husband builds furniture and I agree with dg2011, these smell like varnish. Since eating that one, my throat is burning.
I just got a box of saltines, from my neighbor. She is moving and giving me all of her unopened food. I opened the box, and before opening the sleeve of crackers I smelled something chemically. I just pushed it aside, and opended the sleeve. I ate one cracker and before I finished chewing it all I tasted was a chemical, and the more I chewed the worse it got. Now I have a strong metal, and chemical taste in my mouth that I can't seem it get rid of it. The brand is Nabisco original premium saltine crackers.
I opened a package of Saltines and ate one and noticed a very bad taste and smell. I wasn't sure where it was coming from and started to eat another one and smelled the Saltine cracker and it reeked of a horrible chemical smell? Didn't smell like anything that could come from a food item. It has left a strong chemical taste in my throat and has left me feeling queazy. I have two small boys who eat Saltines a lot, I'd like to know the source and cause of this and determine whether it is a danger. Has anyone heard from Nabisco on this matter? It is very serious.
We just opened a fresh package of saltine crackers that we keep in a storage tin, so we don't have the original box. Horrible smell, but decided to crumble some in my soup anyway. The taste was an incredibly disgusting chemical that burned the back of my throat. Managed to spit it out, but taste remains after several hours, Had to toss all the remaining packages and the tin as well.
OMG the same thing happened to us today!
Just opened a box of Original Premium Saltine Crackers today. Something had a strong chemical smell to it but I did not realize it was the crackers until after I had already eaten one. I checked another package in the same box to see if it had the same problem, and it did. Right now I am really hoping that they are not poisoned. I started checking on the internet for recalls and poisoned crackers when I came across this site. Hopefully everyone who had the same problem and left a comment is still alive. I called the [protected] Nabisco emergency number they referred to on there 1-800 # but they "have never heard about this problem". The UPC # is [protected].
I just had the same chemical/pesticide experience w/ Nabisco Original Premium (last 4 upc...0507), and Homekist brand.Guess I'll run to the store and try another brand.
Weird. I just had the same thing happen. Same UPC. Already have a casserole in the oven with them in it! Sounds like I should throw it out even if it tastes ok.
I just experienced the smelly chemical cracker last night and googled it this morning. I was surprised to find so many others. I wish to go on record here as another voice. Thinking maybe I was poisoned, I left notes at work stating that "these crackers tasted like chemicals". My UPC code was different then the previous comments. It is ... [protected]. Purchased from Covington Costco in Wa. state, summer of 2012
Thanks, Chris
I just had the Nabisco Premium Original Saltine Crackers experience. What a foul nasty smell and taste, makes you wonder what chemicals you have just eaten. Smelled like leather cleaner, ammonia, and pesticide mix together. The Product code on the box was [protected]. Tried to communicate with company by "Report a Product issue", however the continue button did nothing. Purchase in Minnesota. Why hasn't the company replied or done recall!
Thanks,
Marvin Anderson
the paint smell from the box is so strong it makes me feel sick... nabisco original prem crackers ups [protected]
I, too, just had the same experience with Nabisco Original Premium Saltine Crackers and decided to search the internet. Found this site like many others. I knew that the crackers might be stale as they were about a month past their expiration date, but figured since they were going into soup, they would be fine. As soon as I opened the box and the first sleeve of crackers, that horrible chemical smell attached my nose. They immediately went into the trash. I pulled out the box and look at the UPC code to see if it matched the others noted here: yes it does, [protected] 8. The sleeves smelled, the crackers smelled, and the box smells. How disgusting and disappointing. I never experienced anything like this before. These were purchased in Winchester, VA in 2011.
I you have post on here like I have and have had no response, you might try this link.. I just posted here. I hope it gets a response.

Thanks, Chris
Unfortunately I have to report that the brand name is not limited to Nabisco. After helping my older father paint primer on walls in his home, he and his sister made chili for lunch. While others in the painting group ate the chili with crackers I found the flavor to be horrible. I could not figure out what would taste so horrible. I chocked it up to the smell of ammonia from the paint primer that may have stuck in my throat since breathing them for about three of four hours. .I agree with the writer who stated the smell was like leather cleaner, chemicals, and pesticide combined together. To late for my chili however. While I ate only three to five bites due to the foul flavor of the meal others ate much more. Later this evening we all had a vegetable soup that was homemade. I opened a sleeve of crackers and the smell nearly knocked me over. I had others smell the sleeve I had just opened as well as the sleeve from lunch time; the smell was sickening. While I seem to be experiencing only some minor cramping and light bloating (may be from the vegetable soup) I am left to wonder what in the world was wrong with the crackers. My wife and me has looked online for other complaints and have found hundreds of others experiencing the same thing. The crackers we had were Kroger Brand Saltine Crackers purported to have been purchased just before Christmas 2012, not nearly old enough to be outdated or expired. While we have been able to locate hundreds of similar complaints by consumers there appears to be no response by Nabisco or other food companies concerning this product. If there is an answer to this riddle will someone please post it so that those who have eaten the crackers have some peace of mind concerning toxicity or poisoning. We are unable to post the UPC code here since the box is now in my fathers trash can 65 miles away, however I do remember there being a 44000 or similar number at the beginning of the UPC Code. Please be cautious when purchasing this product. It is likely the smell permeates the box and can be smelled without opening the box while at the store.
We just opened our box yesterday, same UPC, and after trying one cracker from two different sleeves threw the entire box away. There wasn't a strong smell but the crackers definitely had a chemical taste to them. I ate less than one cracker and my tongue burned a tiny bit.
I did call customer service and am being reimbursed the cost of the crackers and they are sending a report to their quality control dept.
I just had the same chemical or some sort of smell from a new package. What's going on? The 800# is of no use because all they say is we never heard of this happening... I always thought Nabisco was a trusted company guess not any more.
I experienced the same thing this week. I made a meatloaf - using Meijer brand 100% Wheat saltines. Which makes me even more convinced it's the sleeves that the crackers are put in. It permeates the box and crackers. It's happening to many brands and even different kinds of crackers. Something is NOT right and this needs to be stopped! I see posts as old as 2009 on this complaint blog. so the problem STILL exists- with apparent total disregard for the consumers. This disgusting smell and taste stayed in my nose and taste-buds for 2 days - regardless of teeth brushing & mouth wash and air freshener & candles. It's unpleasant and scary - cuz I seriously, thought the product had been tampered with or some chemicals had combined and morphed into something poisonous! The wasted money of the crackers - and all the other ingredients to my family's meatloaf - and the wasted time - only to serve nothing but macaroni and cheese to a family who had all lost their appetites.
I also ate a saltine that smells contaminated I no longer have the original box but I cant get the smell out of my nose and I now have a splitting headache. I hope the worst that happens is a headache
Were you okay? I ate one too, and I’m worried sick!
My husband spent 17 hours of this July 4th weekend in the hospital. The doctor said it was "food poisoning" which caused him to have cramps, nausea, vomiting, bloating and confusion. My husband was in tremendous pain from the stomach cramps - even the policeman that pulled me over at 3:30a.m. for speeding told me to get him to the hospital quick (and didn't give me a ticket). After reviewing the food my husband ate in the previous 2-36 hours and the other family members did not, we determined that it was the Nabisco Original Premium Saltine Crackers (UPC#[protected]). Upon pulling the box from the cabinet, I noticed right away that it smelled very horrible - like when oil goes bad and the chemicals start breaking down. The doctor did advise us to call the FDA this week and report the food poisoning; he believes the product should be pulled from the shelves. My husband was seriously ill - take this as a warning to stay away from this product.
I just opened some Nabisco saltines I had in my desk and the smell was awful...like chemicals. They were wrapped in the original wax paper but I don't have the box. I also had them inside a ziploc bag. As soon as I opened it I was hit with a strong chemical smell. I thought maybe it was the ziploc bag that made it smell. I took a bite and it tasted horrible. Then I looked online and saw all these postings. Very scary! I will for sure complain to Nabsico. I have eaten Premium saltines for decades. Never had this happen. But I'm done...won't buy them anymore.

I just wrecked a beautiful meatloaf by using rancid saltines! I had been painting all morning and when I opened the brand new sleeve of crackers I smelled something ( like paint) but i figured it was just me. I crushed the saltines in my meatloaf and baked it. I was so hungry I didn't even really notice something was off until my son said something. Then my husband also said " this meatloaf tastes strange" . Thinking back I realized that maybe the crackers did smell weird so I pulled out another sleeve and low and behold that was the culprit! So far we haven't gotten sick and just hope we don't ! Never thought in a million years crackers go rancid! I'll NEVER make that mistake again. Thanks nabisco!
Same thing happened to us. Where is p&g in all of this?
I recently opened a sleeve of crackers from an expired box of crackers, tasted one cracker and immediately spit it out. It was rancid and tasted chemically, like bug spray or insecticide. I now have a bad headache; glad I didn't ingest any more than I did! My UPC Code is [protected]. I have checked the internet and do not find where these have been recalled, which is sad, considering all the complaints here, .
I agree with a previous poster. I do not think this is limited to NB. Several months ago, I opened a new sleeve of Bremer Water Wafer crackers, they tasted rancid. I threw them away, they were not out dated, but tasted terrible. Today I was making a squash casserole. It calls for crushed saltine crackers. I had a box of Kroger brand, not outdated, and 3 unopened sleeves. I crushed the crackers and put them in the casserole, then got the smell. I new immediately they were rancid. The casserole was ruined. If you have ever smelled or used rancid oils, this is exactly what it smells and tastes like. I hope someone is able to find out why this is happening, I will no longer buy large amounts of cracker anymore.
I had the same experience from saltine crackers. Put them in soup...ruined my soup and tasts buds. Still tasting that awful taste 5 hours later...reason I googled to see if others have same experience.
There "saltine crackers" terrible tasting the ones bought in both the states an canada
UPC # 0 [protected] 1 EXPIRATION DEC 14 2013 I also have experienced all the above complaints...the only difference is that my crackers were KEEBLER ZESTA "ORIGINAL" SALTINE CRACKERS...This problem seems to be ongoing since MAY OF 2010! Why isn't the manufacturers doing anything about this? These crackers are deplorable and should not be consumed by anyone!
I WILL BE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS TO EVERYONE, FROM FRIENDS TO OFFICIALS! THESE CRACKERS NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM THE SHELVES OF ALL VENDORS, PERIOD! WATCH OUT KEEBLER..HERE I COME.
FROM AN EXTREMELY CONCERNED & ENRAGED CONSUMER..

I too, opened a package today to make a salmon casserole. I thought the smell was odd then realized they were outdated by a couple months, Aug 2013. I went ahead and used in casserole and had to throw it all out as the chemical smell got worse as it baked. They were the Zesta saltine crackers. Had a bite several hours ago and still my throat and taste buds have the smelly taste. Never ever have had this happen with the product. Won't buy it again.
