trying to sell clothing
I'm very pissed off everytime I go into this store they never buy anything you have these young kids looking at the things and really don't know what they are looking at. Now these are things I know I paid good money for and they always say they can't take it. #the worst store ever
rude, horrible offers on clothes.
I took a box full of items which would retail for between $300 and $350. All were clean and were in unworn or like new condition. The clerk, who was not particularly polite or pleasant, told me it would be about three hours before the offer would be ready, and that they'd call me. She told me that they'd pay me about 30% of retail for the items.
Since they never called me as promised, I called them at close to closing time that evening. They told me the offer was ready, and I asked them what it was. They refused to tell me over the phone, saying they were only "allowed" to tell me in person.
When I arrived a day later, they told me that the offer was $12 for the entire box. That's about ten percent of what they told me they'd offer--somewhere around three percent of the original cost! I refused the offer, but they told me that I'd have to stand in line to "void the transaction" or I couldn't have my own property back. Everyone I spoke to was at best uncaring and at worst rude.
Even worse, they told me that if I hadn't picked up my clothes that day they would have donated them to a charity. I can guess what that charity would be...
Finally, when I went through my items, I found that several of the best items were missing, including a limited edition jacket.
I wish it were possible to give a store less than zero stars.
I will never, ever consider recommending them to anyone. Ever.
bad for business!! plato's closet? more like pandora's closet
I call BS on the business practices of the Plato's Closet in Ridgeland, MS! My experience was next to horrible. In my opinion, the only thing that should be taken into consideration when purchasing clothes from a donor is the value/worth of the clothes themselves. When I went into the Plato's Closet in Ridgeland, MS, I was instantly sized up from head to toe. It was a very eerie feeling, however, I chose to proceed with my donations. I eventually left my clothes there and returned back 2 hours later to see what they took vs. not. [I had three bags sorted accordingly with shoes, shirts/dresses, and jeans. I had a pair of True Religion jeans as well as other designer apparel. Most of my pieces even had the tags on them.] Needless to say, when I returned I was told that ALL of my items had been rejected. Initially, I thought surely with the poor selection in the store they would have taken a few of my items. The girl who checked my bag [who was also the manager of the store] had a grin on her not so slim looking face the entire time. The card stated that my items where rejected due to wear, non-teen items, and where out of season by 2 years. I call absolute BS! What wear? Out of season? To items that were recently bought, never worn, and still had the tags on them? OK gotcha! Even another sales clerk apologized, she couldn't believe it either. Several other customers who saw me come in with my items were shocked they did not take anything. I say this not as a angry customer seeking a resolution. I believe in the value of my things, and I know they will be bought one way or another. It was Plato's who missed out on that one. The purpose of this complaint is to notify ALL Plato's stores, [especially the one in Ridgeland, MS] to alert their team about good business practices. It is not right to pass on a person's merchandise due to personal bias. That can be bad for a business that is so largely based on individual donations. The better the clothes, the better the profit. Rid your stores of these people, so you won't have to do a promo every other week to get rid of your merchandise like the Plato's Closet in Ridgeland, MS. It just doesn't add up. I absolutely won't be back to Plato's in Ridgeland, MS and won't encourage others to go either.
lied to the customer
This evening I visited the Plato’s Closet in El Cajon that recently opened. The store had digital signage indicating that it was open for business. The doors were unlocked. I entered and was greeted by the sales staff. The store was well-stocked with a good selection of the merchandise that I come in for, Men’s sneakers and shirts. In fact, of the 68 Plato’s Closet stores that I have visited in 14 states it was in the top 10. I picked out three shirts and a pair of sneakers with prices properly marked adding up to over $80 and was told that the store wasn’t really open and I could not purchase the merchandise.
Apparently, the franchises have to wait a certain time before they can sell their inventory. The manager did not even know when the store would actually open. I left the store incredibly disappointed and angry after traveling 20 miles one way.
This corporate policy is incredibly stupid and can only cause hard feelings among potential customers. It is possible that I will not set foot in the 70th store in the 15th state. The merchandise is second hand rejects for goodness sakes. It is an upscale thrift store. How can the corporate office have the arrogance to turn away customers at the very time that new customers are forming their first impressions? And the sneakers were some of my favorites that would add to my marcosian shoe collection. I am disappointed and angry. I can’t stand stupidity on the part of rich people who should know better.
poor service
I came to Platos Closet and brought a large bag of very gently used clothing into this store. The young lady that looked over my things to see if they would want them didnt want not ONE item, stating that they were not good enough and because some of them werent name brand. Although I looked around their entire store and mostly Everything in this store was clearly damaged and very worn out. I took pictures also. This company only accepts what they want to depending on the person who looks at your items. I contacted this store by email thinking a manager would respond or contact me back about this and No One did. It clearly shows how Unprofessional they are when it comes to customer complaints about their store. There are alot of Young kids who work in this store. Also mostly everything they had for sell was clearly damaged, faded, scratched, etc but they accepted these items and didnt want the clothing I tried to provide to them that had only been worn Twice! The things they had for sale I wouldnt let my Dog wear! Another time I brought in very new items that had never been worn and they didnt except those either. They also want to buy things from you for little or nothing and they sell it in their store very expensive! They rip off their customers and something needs to be done about this company! It makes all the Platos Closets look very Bad! I will not be providing service to this company again!
selling fake shoes/not standing behind your merchandise!
So here goes, I have been shopping with all Platos around Virginia for at least 4 years, lately I have spent close to $5000. at just the Fredricksburg store. About a month ago I stopped in Charlottsville and bout 5 pairs of shoes. Then went on vacation, when I got back I always show my friend my finds. He works at Finish Line, told me 2 pairs were fake. No big deal so I called Charlottsville VA, and they said they couldn't help me, so I tried again, no luck. I called a third time and let Jennifer know that I was going to file a credit card dispute. So I did. After a couple of days she called back and said owner had no problem with exchanging, I said great! So I live 2 hours from Charlottsville Store and haven't went up yet. So on this past Friday, I got a Blocked call from the owner of these two stores, I was thinking he was going to call and talk nice and say thanks for your business, but instead he told me I wasnt aloud back in either store. Made me really upset. I feel like if your going to be a business man you shouldn't block your number and also if a mistake is made take care of it. He basically doesnt stand behind his merchandise. I have dozens of friends who I told that Platos is the spot to go for buying and selling. So, I have bought 87 pairs of shoes within the last few months, I have talked with my credit company and they said we can make this into a big dispute, and wouldn't stop there. I'm honestly hurt that he had the nerve to call me to say me these things. Very unprofessional.
So couple weeks ago before all this, I called which I thought was your corporate office, I spoke to a really nice lady from Florida, very nice and helpful. So I told that I was asking politely if there could be something done about the employees writing with permanent marker on the shoes, not anything big, and I also addressed about the fake shoes. She said she would look into it. Her name was Jennifer.
So last week I was in Fredericksburg, I was purchasing 5 pairs of shoes and I always ask for a discount because I spend so much, but they told me they don't give discounts. Well one of my friends was in there too. He said he loves going there because the people give him 20% off his bill with him only a pair or two. I asked him did you give them a voucher he said no. I know the employee who did this, but am disclosing his name.
So on Friday of last week, I was in Fredericksburg store and walked up to the counter my friend was buy 3 pairs, and I was buying 4 pairs, and I was told I wasn't welcomed at the store anymore and my friend Jay couldn't purchase either because she was with me. I'm very polite, I honestly though I would like to work there at one point. This is the worst expierance I have ever had from any franchise. After spending I know 10k this is how a business is ran? I don't think so. I haven't ever complained nor asked for a refund, but when I do I get a owner calling me telling me how unhappy I was of a customer and told me to never come back. I will wait for your response before contacting a few sources about these issues. I hope we can resolve this like adults like we are. And be able to still do business.Like I said I go to Platos often 3-4 times a week. Also I think the manager has a bit of an attitude issue with me, not sure why because I always am nice and polite to her. Plus cooperate doesn't do anything besides ignore you and turn you down. We are a franchise and not responsible for our stores and chain. Great business ethics!

Racist prejudice and unfair
I have had several bad experiences doing business with platos closet they offer you less for your items if you are non white. Some of the items I used to take in there to sell were brand new and some were even still on the rack in the store. Their excuses were the clothes were not in fashion or they look worn..###! I had one of my white friends take the same items in to sell for me they offered here a very fair price and that confirmed that platos closet in lakeland florida is racist. My last expirirnce there I need last minute clutch purse for going out this same night I figured if I sell a couple items then I wouldn't have to purchase anything from them. I took 2 shirts 1 pair of size 11 heels and some accessories. They offered me 8 dollars and told me they don't take shoes over size 10. I never seen a business say something like that. Prejudice racist and unfair.

Same thing happened to me in Midlothian, VA. They offer significantly less for items from black customers. Both white customers ahead of me were offered over $100 for their items. I’m a shopolohic so I had multiple brand new items and 2 piece sets from fashion nova and Shein. They took a shirt from a set ( not the bottom) a pair of jeans and a old tube top that really ended up there by accident and offered me $8. I guess our style isn’t their “fashion”. You’ll see a black employee every once in a while but they’ll be very uncultured an they never sort I noticed. Especially since new management. I will never shop there again & I’ve been shopping there for years.

Oh by the way, i wanted to add to my last comment above. The plato's closet is filthy when they pre sifted because they didn't look through everything. But as they pre-sifed through my clothes they placed my bags in a roach infested area. Although i didn't know it at the time. These teenage brats at the store had the nerve to ask for my ID multiple times in order to release my clothes back to me that she sifted out in front of me. Can you believe that?! They totally wanted to pick a darn fight although i was in a good mood. Then told be i couldn't bring shoes in the dressing room which had a mirror so i can see how it looks on my feet. They told me to leave the shoes outside the dressing room to try them on in front of every one. They then micro-watched me the whole time. It got so bad i told them to take their clothes back since they feel i may steal laughing out loud. Mind you people they have high security cameras, security tags on every darn item so if you tried to steal it will set the store door alarms off. So they are just retarded (shaking my head). I am a woman of color and also seen racist young white customers in the store rolling their eyes, looking at me evil or wouldn't shop in the same isle as me. They waited until i left the isle or they tried to push pass me aggressively through the isle. Not sure why anyone is dealing with or promoting racism in the 21st century. Being envious of other races and cultures is just wicked, ignorant and abusive. But yeah i'm 40 years old but look 20 so they think i'm young and stupid like them. I'm very classy, live in very nice neighborhood with 2 bank accounts filled with money. So all the following me around stores and rearranging everything i touch is just retarded. They gave me roaches by the way. I took my stuff back home to count my things to make sure they didn't steal something etc. Because i heard they steal people's stuff. A roach crawled out of my bag like i couldn't believe it because in my area we never ever get roaches. How gross of them. I was like did they plant the roach there just out of spite (shaking my head). Bottom line don't shop there or any darn Plato's. Shop at SHEIN, Rainbows, Charolette Russe, Ebay, Poshmark they are all on line and low prices with high quality clothes. These dum teens wouldn't let me make a formal complaint to the store owner either because they claim they can't give out the owners corporate info to anyone. So i have to go through them. Yeah right!
Who ever wrote these reviews are awesome. The same thing happened to me in big flats NY. All my clothes were never worn and high end designer. Most of all their clothes were Walmart raggedy looking out dated clothes. The shoes smelt like rotten feet and we're very dirty. My shoes were new designer with tags and these racist narcissistic idiots told me the will not buy it because it's not fashion or they can't really sell shoes. So then I decided to shop the store. With them following me around the store, rolling their eyes at me or what's worst trying to keep my things locked up behind the counter. I decided to find articles about Plato being racist and decided lessoned learned. I will never shop or step foot in a toxic environment like that. Then they tried to sell me crap and got an evil attitude because I refuse to buy from them laughing out loud
I'm done with the idiocy already
I will sell on Ebay!
I’ve had the same experience. I recently went to my local Plato’s closet with a handful of items, including an extremely expensive (more than $100) Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt that was worn two times and had absolutely no wear (along with a handful of other nice quality items that the sign said they were specifically looking for, including shorts, summer wear, denim, and athletic wear, and some jewellery). They did not take a single item due to “wear and tear” and “old labels” (even though I know for a fact many of the items were less than a year old).
I then saw the girl sorting through another bag of clothes and accept a few extremely worn and outdated dresses, describing them as “cute”.
A day later I had a white friend bring in the same bag of clothes and they accepted about half of the items.
bad business practices
Beware of platos closets rules and regulations that is unforseen due to they wont tell you. If you go to a platos closet the first thing they want is your personel information before a transaction is even made, and the reason for this is the franchise owners do call the police in you if you go there and they feel you have stole the clothes especially if they have tags on them. Do not give them your personel information. I called their corporate office at [protected] the name of the corporation that franchises these stores is called windmar corporation. They tell me these franchise owners can not require that you give your personel information but i did my research and yes the corporate office lied you do have to give up your information incase the franchise owner feels like calling the police thinking you committed a possible theft felony from a store. Im going to do m research further and find out what major store like for instance walmart k mart or some other store like that owns windmar and they are doing this for finding theifs who steel their product and leave tags on then try to sell them. Tomorow im going to the better business bureau in merrillville and file a consumer complaint on the valpo in store, due to bad businss practices and i do have the proof, and every time anyone enters a franchise store and their info is required dont do it just go file a complaint and blog your experience and tell the whole world then atorney generals of each and every state could possibly get involved. If you think im joking about one of these franchises, just call your local police dept, because every time they call the police it is public information, never give them your i d or personel information. Have a good and safe day and dont be a statistic of their demise practices.

customer service
I had brought two large bags of clothes into Plato's closet to sell. The young woman told me it would be about a 20 minute wait while they went through my stuff so I walked around the store. She was done in about 8 minutes. I went up to the counter & asked if my stuff was already done & they said yes. So another employee came over to tell me they were...

The owner is a old white lady, she is racist, rude, doesn't want anything but your money, and looks at all blacks like she hates them. She has family members that works there with her that's rude just like her. When you ask her questions on the phone she would hang up in your face, and the blacks that works with her they are nice but she doesn't want them to carry a conversation with the customers. If some one is reading this please find someone else to manage this store. Thank you.

management
Immediately walking into the store the manager Amber had an attitude like she didn't want to buy my clothes. I blew it off and started to shop but when she called my name to tell me what she could purchase from me she again had an attitude. After she offered me money for my clothes she cashed me out and slammed the register before even asking me if I'd like to use it towards buying more clothes. Normally that's something that's offered to customers because you save on sales tax. When I told her that's what I wanted to do she yelled at me and told me there's nothing I can do for you now! When my boyfriend picked up the sign to get the owners number she ripped it out of his hand and called him a dummy! She said if you want to talk to them I'll call them for you, but when she did she did nothing but lie and wouldn't let me talk to them! After hanging up with the owner she told us to get out of her store and then chased us out to our car and threatened to fight me! I was in shock, I had my 3 year old daughter with me! I think she was on drugs because I still can't understand why anyone would act the way she did!

bad associates
I went to Plato's Closet with my friend. My friend donated 2 brand new designer items, and she only got $7.50! I took a bag of old clothes, and they didn't take a single thing! Apparently the clothes have to be currently in style; they can't even be 1-2 years outdated!
The girls were b*****s, and the girl who checked us out (I'm pretty sure her name was Sarah Carlson, and she went to my high school), asked my friend if she wanted to buy her own sunglasses just because she was holding them! And the girls are not one to judge clothes, because she had hair that was dyed brown in the front and blonde in the back, and she was wearing the same pink sweatshirt that I've always seen her in. It was completely ridiculous, and needless to say, I won't be going back there again.

bull*!
Bul****! I took ALL my name brand clothes in; hollister, aeropostale, a&f, wet seal, catos. All never really been worn. She was giving me dirty looks, when I walked up to the counter. She wouldn't look me in the eyes, just everywhere else while fiddling with the bag. As she says "these look like they've been worn, we don't take jackets yet" as she kept going, I said "hold the f*** up, of course they've been worn. What do you expect? Brand new damn clothes that I just bought? And oh, you don't take winter jackets IN THE WINTER? you're a special kinda stupid aren't you? Don't worry we won't be coming back. So she LAUGHS! I've never been so pissed, and I'm a genuinely nice person . This isn't the first time its happened either. My sister came in, and had two bags. We were all trying on s bunch of clothes and they were rushing us outta there. "Yall need to hurry up were about to close" So my sister snatched both the bags away from the woman and we left. They are SO rude, every single person I've delt with.

The clothes probably smelled of body odor and patchouli.
racist
This store is racist! I took a basket full of boots, jeans, and. 4 Polo Ralph Lauren shirts, 2 with tags! The took 1 pair of jeans, jewelry, a brand new pair of boots, 1 shirt and a purse and gave me 20.00! I sent my friend in the store a week later with the items they "passed" on .. By the way she was Caucasian and they gave her 45.00! This store is a bunch of c***! I will never sell any items there again! It's a bunch of college kids working there who don't know what they are doing!

As much as I hate to say it, i too believe that Plato's Closet is prejudice towards African American shoppers who try to sell back clothes. I've shopped at the Plato's closet location in Orland Park Illinois and most things on the racks are worn, dingy, and some items have stains on them. I've tried to sell back items and they did not fully go through my things. They took a look at the first few things at the top of my bad and didn't even look at the rest. My clothes were folded just as I had folded them. Some things even had tags on them. Worn and out of style my ###!
Some people have a different taste in style. They simply are NOT racist. If your were in the position to buy you would know.
girl shut up! this establishment is racist. period
lazy/obtuse females
Brought in a bunch of almost new clothes, brand name, and in style. I usually get decent money, but this time i got barely any money at all. I thoroughly checked all of the clothing to make sure there were no holes or stains. And I also conducted a small experiment. I bought some high priced clothing items from them a week ago. I put that in the bag just to see if they would take it or if they are just lazy and dont care, orrrrrr if they cant figure out whats on style...Anyways, they only took 2 things, of which i had worn to hell and had not been any of the items that were purchased a week ago. Its a scam and i would not even bother taking clothes there to be bought out.

I have taken tons of clothes to Platos Closet. In style and expensive and got less than $8.00! ### one shirt in there usually costs more than that. They are a total rip off and I agree with you!
awful
My daughter and I went into the Plato's closet in Pike Creek shopping center. When we first walked in there was an overwhelming smell of dirty clothes. Obviously they take in dirty laundry. There were outfits that looked like hookers would wear them. Plus the associates were rude. It was basically an overpriced Goodwill.
scam
I took some bags of clothing into Plato's Closet, and the "manager" ended up picking out 1 pair of pants. She told me that they can sell them for $12 so she could give me $4.25 for them. She said many of the clothes she said were "old" and "outdated." She proceeded to tell me that certain name brands did not sell and didn't have a "high turnover rate." I had a sweater in there that I hadn't even worn yet that I bought just after Christmas and she passed by that! The receipt was still in the bag! I showed her a dress that they had on the hanger that looked way older than the one I had in my pile. My dress was a beautiful royal blue with a bright white floral print on it and I took good care of it. The one on the rack was yellowing and looked about 30 years old! EVERYTHING in that store screamed old... She ever so genuinely offered to take the clothes to "Bibles for Missions" for me... I said I would take them because I suspect that they don't actually donate them... they tell you that they "can't" sell them, and when you leave they put a price on them so they don't have to pay you anything. I also suspect that if the clothes go past a certain size, or if you don't fit into their acceptable descriptive criteria, they won't do much for you. A worst case of "Pretty Woman Syndrome" that I've ever seen. Winmark should be taking a look at this site and realizing that their whole plan of "cash for goods" is quickly being discovered as a scam, and anyone who happily supports their business is just as dishonest and crooked as they are. Anyone in their right mind knows its all a farce. Its discriminating and false advertising. A waste of time, energy, money and gas... Its only a matter of time before someone with a conscience and the power does something about them.
the owner
I would just like to state that the way the owner of Plato's Closet in Barrie On.treats her staff is pathetic, after 3 years I still have not received a review or a raise, I am to be on call on my weekend off, I am punished if I am sick and cannot get someone to cover my shift, one employee has even been fired because she went to her grandmothers funeral and did not get her shift covered. We are forced to respond to stupid emails that make no sense and have to go to a mall twice a month and research the new clothing inventory on our time without pay and take pictures proving we are there. when we book a weekend off we are punishment the following week by not being put on the schedule. She has verbally abused myself and many other staff members by yelling ans screaming at us, We are all students that work there and trying to put ourselves through school and when it is exam time there is no room for negotiation on time off to study. This women used to be a school teacher you would think she would also care about our education and please do not get me wrong I am a very good employee and very well liked at the store but am never encouraged about my positive nature only negative.

rude customer service
I see that certain stores in Indianapolis are prejudice and I pay good money for my clothes and they are trendy I even bring clothes in that may have tags on them that I have not even worn and they do not want to buy them. yet I look around the store and all I see is clothes that are a size 1to maybe 8 and they are worst then the stuff I have to sell which is a size 10. My girlfriend is white I sought her in the store and they brough most of the stuff I had. It is clearly a discrimination of something. I am not sure if the owners of the stores know this but most of them have friends they buy their stuff or should I say their junk. I don't even shop at Platos I do not like the fact of wearing someone elses clothes regardless if I wash them. But I do not like the fact that my expensive items were turned down. The customer service was rude and a over weight and I told her larger sizes definitely need to be excepted cause I know that it is another reason for you not excepting my items cause they are trendy and some are new. So whoever owns this company need to know this is going on.

rude, nasty, lazy
I went into Plato's Closet in Jackson it was my first experience in the store I was very disappointed in how the manager there was
treating customers and employees. I thought the store would have decent, classy, clean workers this store has the look of a tatoo shop. The manager there is covered all over all down her arms with nasty tatoos and dresses nasty as well. I notice 2 or 3 other
women there that are covered in tatoos on their neck, arms etc. I'm sorry but how do you exspect people to get a great deal on their clothes or even buy anything in there if these are the women picking out the lastest styles. I also noticed the manager being extremely rude to a new girl who had just started. Now this young women looked decent for this store. I overheard her yelling at her in front of customers then make the comment "she hired you" so i guess the manager was not even doing her job on hiring either. Anyways, i left did not buy one thing and will not be back until management changes.
I am the store manager. Im sorry that you have such a distaste for skin art. I also apologise that you are assuming that employees personal tastes in clothing and self expression translate into what we buy and what "deals" you might get in our store. Personal preferences in clothing have no bearing on what our buyers buy. We recieve style and trend guidelines directly from our corporate office. We also browse the most recent fashion magazines to see what is crossing the runways and especially what some of the celebritys are currently wearing. By no means, are personal styles ever to contradict what we are on trend to buy, and we work on whats hot and whats not on a daily basis. I can guarantee that if you "think" you heard me yelling at anyone in the store, for any reason, you must have me confused with another employee and so I would encourage you to please come in and discuss with me your experience so that I may personally give you a tour of the store and help you find what you were looking for. And also that I may take corrective action with the correct person that was yelling. I am sincerely sorry that you did not enjoy your first experience in Plato's Closet Jackson... I would love the opportunity to remedy your feelings. Please feel free to call me, Ginny, at the store: [protected] and we can discuss a good time for me to help you in any way that I can.
I appreciate your complaint, since I am the NEW store manager and it is my intention to provide the best customer service possible and any "rude, nasty, lazy" behavior is not acceptable and I take every opportunity to make improvements and build an even better store than the day before; and so to you, I am grateful.
Have an amazingly great day!
