This store is such a scam! Prices are the same as buying the stuff NEW on SALE at the regular retail store in the mall. There are no savings! Not to mention, some locations take anything including stained or dirty items, others have a non-updated “label/tag book”. Tried getting rid of some jeans and shirts (aeropostle, gravel, American eagle) that I just bought my kid at the beginning of the school year but their “book” claims they are out dated. What a crock! So glad other websites and online yard sales still exists. Second complaint is when I have “sold” items to Plato’s, they don’t even give enough money to buy one of their items. I’m sticking with sales at mall stores.

inconsistancy
I purchased 6 pair of kakis from them in January. Decided today, I really didn't need them and I had never worn them.Went back to resell to them, and was told they could only accept 2 of the 6. When I questioned that decision and told them I felt they have a problem with consistency because all 6 items came from their store, I got some story about old stock..
maybe someone from the company can better explain the real reason.

I went into the Plato's closet in richmond, va. and got the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I brought in 4 bags of new clothes never been worn and was told they were to used, so i went home and came back with brand new women's Timberland boots and I was told they couldn't sell them because they were too small. I hadn't felt the need to complain up until this point. I've put up with these rude young girls and their poor attitudes/lack of customer service for a while. The shopping experience had out weighed the last encounter (checking out) prior to leaving the store. Recently I had a return, a no nonsense that went awry. My refund did not appear back into my acct, even after a week(this was a debit transaction). The "manager was less than professional, wasn't listening and thought it appropriate to "over talk" me. I requested her boss and was refused, wouldn't take my info to refer to her boss. Instead she felt the need to tell me what her boss would do. That was not my request. This ill mannered young adult continued her refusal to grant my request and pushed my buttons til I called her a "###" and threatened to go to the store and act a donkey so customers could know my displeasure, she hung up. I called back andthe hussy still refused to obtain my info to refer to her boss. I called corp and they had the "boss" call me, who of course defended her employee ("she'd never do that"). Apparently the employee is always 100% correct, regardless. Poor business ethics. This little girl manager would be eaten up and spat out outside of this store, in the "real" world. I didn't ask for anything more than I was entitled to: respect, to be listened to, objectiveness, sensibility, oh yeah my money. If she couldn't handle it with out over speaking and rudeness she should have excused herself and properly referedthe info. They have caller ID, I know this since she called back on the phone i called from, not the # I left with corporate(manager called). She was a poor rep for a manager but handled the situation out of apparent fear of me coming to the store and expressing my displeasure publically. Noone wants to be treated any less than a person with a concern, pretend to give a damn even if you don't when you deal with the public.
I have no idea who's managing the store during the day a d night however they missed out on 18 pair of Miss me's and a ton of BCBG that has never been worn.. They will not hold over night or take a credit card over the phone... That is missing a lot of business.. However, when I asked for the owner the Manager said she could t five that out... Not like I can't find out...Terrible customer service... There's people standing everywhere 2 try a d check out. I truly believe they have a lot of theft in the store bc no one is watching the camera's... I am so disappointed... The Birmingham store is so much better...

This experience was awful. I have been selling at this location for a long time. The old blonde lady named laurie, who also sirprisongly happens to be the owner. My husband and I were yelled at like 2 children in front of a store full of customers and laughing employees. Why? Because she wa angry that a few items were on our bag from the last trip. This woman should not be the person representing this store, if an employee spoke to us that way, they would have been fired. I will never be able to go back. Sadly, for the fear of being embarrassed again. This was the most awful, unprofessional experience i've ever had at a retail store in my 26 years of life. That woman needs an attitude check, or maybe a competitor store to run her into the ground.

I have been in the store in utica, mi several times and I will never go there for my business. First of all I got to the store at eight o'clock pm and had two laundry baskets full of recently bought items. The girl behind the counter said that they stopped taking in clothes at eight o'clock. Now I have been in this store a few times before and no one has said anything about eight o'clock being the deadline. So she said it would take twenty minutes to look at the items. Now after ten minutes I looked at the counter and the bag wasn't moved or looked through. Ten minutes later I got called up to checkout. They only took four items out of everything that I had just recently bought. I explained to them that everything was bought either a couple weeks ago or within the last six months. They only gave me $10 for those four items which made me start to fume. Now things that I bought were still in style and I told the girls that. Their response was that it wasn't gonna do any good to sell the rest of the items there because it wouldnt give them any business to sell clothes that were "out of style." now I am a shopper so I look for current styles and I know what is in style. These clothes were certainly in style. I have never been so mad and for this to be my fourth time in the store and still get the same response is just bulls*. I am telling everyone I know not to go to the store in utica anymore because they are just pure lazy and disrespectful. So congrats utica store you just lost another customer.

the store I was fired from
I am a pregant worker just became pregant. I have been working at Plato's Closet since way before they opened and it is 9:38 I just got a TEXT from a person at work telling me im fired, It wasn't the owner nor a manager who told me. I have called in this past monday and a few weeks before because my morning sickness has been so bad and lasting throughout the whole day so bad that i couldnt make it to work. I have asked numerous times if I needed a note when i missed work and nobody ever said I did. So i didnt bring one. If I would have known I needed a note I would have brought one up there immediatley every time I missed, Ive done it with every other job when I missed. This job would be no different. My BOSS is never at work ever. She drops by for literally 5 min then leaves to go get her hair done, work out, eat, go to the bar, go home to her home state and much more. WE HAVE OUR STORE BEING RAN BY 18, 19 AND 20 years olds. This is ridiculous. This store does not go by the rules and I would have not ever done anything to jeperdize my job. BUT THIS IS TOO FAR. IM BEING FIRE BECAUSE IM PREGNANT? like REALLY. thats illegal. our boss is a ### boss excuse my launguage. I think she literally woke up one day and was like IM gonna open a platos and i know nothing. SHE HAS EVERYONE DO HER WORK FOR HER. the hiring, firing, pay roll, anything that has any effort involved our boss does not do because she has all told us she does not know how! This is ridiculous that a BOSS knows nothing about her new place she opened when SHE is the owner. now that is sad. I think in the bill of rights its says yu cannot fire a pregant person because they are pregant. im almost positive that that is a law. i am beyond peeved that this has happened and I want something done about this. Ive put in a call for cooporate tomorrow to call me back and I will definatley have some words with them too about this immature situation. rude, bad customer service, too expensive
Me and my fiance decided to visit Platos Closet in Raritan, NJ for the first time. Our experience was not delightful at all. The manager (older lady) was extremely rude and her staff. But they always say the apples don't fall far from the tree. They were really snobby; and in terms of customer service they all should have been to a few courses on the matter because they had absolutely none. We took 5 pieces of clothing there; and, the guy at the register told my fiance that he had to wait 2 hours for them to let him know how much they would give him. Well of course, we did not do that! If I waited 2 hours for anything in a store, they would be completely out of business. We also visited the Platos Closet in Edison, NJ after having a horrible experience with the one in Raritan, NJ. I must say that the staff was nicer at the Edison location; however, this location was an actual hole in the wall. It was stuffy, and the clothing was so 5th hand. I wasn't even interested in browsing, but I actually did and; I happened to find several pieces of clothing that was ripped and their "supposedly" second hand stuff was too darn expensive! On top of that, the people making the decisions to purchase articles of clothing has absolutely NO fashion sense. NONE.
They had the nerve to offer me $7.30 for jeans that I paid $100 for--Miss Me jeans that I only wore once. I took my jeans back and told them a big fat NO because they would have it on their rack for a big fat $40-$50 if I would have said yes. It's also a waste of time to take your slightly used fashionable clothing to them because they have no fashion sense and they will probably reject your clothing. So I suggest finding another type of consignment shop or thrift store that will buy your clothing and knows how to treat their customers with the highest regard. I'm totally done with Platos Closet trying to be something they just aren't.

Do not ever waste your time going to this store to sell anything. As you are walking in the door they size you up and decide from that point on if they want your stuff regardless of what you have. If they think you are too old, not "cool" looking etc. the funny thing is they don't even know who you are selling the stuff for plus none of that crap should matter. Don't call and ask if they are taking certain things ahead of time either because that doesn't matter. They are a horrible waste of your time. Someone above said snobbery and that it is. Funny because they are touching and buying other people's used close and shoes, they have no business judging anyone. The owner thinks an aweful lot of herself too and oh by the way if you insist on selling try the same things three times cause by that time someone will accept what another passed on and buy it! They haven't figured that one out yet! LOL way too funny! When you ask why they passed on something they can't even figure it out and that's because they simply just didn't want YOUR stuff...

The Regional Manager Kylie Allen was a major ### to me. She tells me rudely next time don't bring a TRASH bag, yes the word TRASH emphasized. I began asking her for regional information and who she was and she rudely tells me it's just the concept of Plato's Closet because the bag could tear. This fat, stupid ###. What difference does it make? I ran out of the store livid and will not cease until I know that she has been repromended. Her demeanor pissed me off and whether she "prefers" baskets or not if it's not a boldly written company policy how dare that unhealthy ### say such a thing to me. Ugh!

rude disrespectful manager
Manager/owner jamie is rude, undignified, unclassy and discrimination. I tried returning some clothes and she refused to, and kicked me out of the store, told me to never come back. She has no business knowledge and experience. Needs to be replaced by franchise or whomever. Sad for employees in there. Would never reccommend to anyone and will never enter there again. Want all to know in sioux falls. Hope the owner finds someone more mature and capable of being a manager.

I am The rude and disrespectful manager, Jamie. I just happened to stumble upon this and I would now like to clarify a few things. We do accept returns with the tags attached within 7 days of purchase. Our first encounter with Chantel was when wanting to purchase a coat she tore off the tag and insisted it fell off somewhere in the store and was cheaper than what we found it to be. We had it on camera that she put the tag in her pocket and we knew the price since we write that on our coats. She later tried returning an item without the tag attached on 3 different occasions, each with a different reason why the tag had been removed or "had fallen off". Each time she attempted this a different employee was approached. Each time was handled in the same manner. The employees nicely explained that we would have to buy them back from her since the tag wasn't attached because this was our policy. My employees were then disrespected. After having so many issues, we did decide it was better if she did not come to our store. I hope anyone who reads this will come to Plato's Closet and develope their own opinion of our store. We have a fun and friendly staff, great deals, and great clothes! We respect our customers and always appreciate their business! Without them we would be nothing. this women was trying to return jeans with out the tags. lied to employees about her name and where she got the jeans. says she bought them at another store but was trying to return to platos closet. This person may have some serious issues. Parents never loved her. This platos is ranked #4 out of 300 some platos closets in the U.S.
Plato's closet does not accept returns as far as I remember. The owner/manager sets the rules. Do not buy used clothes if you do not want to keep them. Being told no is not bad customer service.

I am currently in the process of moving out of my parents house. While going through my closet I found many clothes I haven't worn, some with tags still left on them. I figured instead of taking them to good will I would try out platos closet to see if I could make some money. once I got there they said it would be an hour wait to get the results. once the time came they gave me back almost all my clothes! only took 4 items and handed the other 30 or so pieces back. said they were either worn and torn or simply didn't want them. must I add these clothes were NEVER worn, and ALL hollister, Abercrombie and American eagle clothes. not ONE wasnt name brand. some still had the perfume scent from the store!
this place is a piece of crap, as I was looking around the store all the clothes they had in there was complete junk and would never wear. apparently they need some other people working behind the counters picking out clothes because there's too much ### everywhere that no one will buy. you can barely look through the racks it's so crammed.
what makes me laugh the most was the fact that the lady who checked my clothes was an older mom. PLEASE. like she would know what's trendy.
they ended up giving me 19$ for the four shirts which isn't bad.. but still. ANY young girl would have gladly bought my clothes over the crap they had there.

My trip today was completely ridiculous! Nothing but lazy, smart mouth, kids I took three bags of clothes in there all new still with tags on them bought within the last 6 months and they told me it would take 30 minutes, I ran next door to get something I was gonna no less than 10 minutes when I came back the clothes were still in the exact same place I left them and the bags were not even opened, the girl behind the counter told me that they would have to pass on all my items because they were older than 18 months.. They didn't even look at them the clothes were in the bag just like I put them in there, I will never go to another plato's closet! And I will make sure anyone I know takes there business elsewhere, they have the worst customer service I have ever experienced, what happened to the customer comes first, nothing but kids who sit behind the counter, or outside smoking when I pulled up none of them were in the store they were outside talking to another group of kids.

I used to love plato's closet, until today. I'm going to tell you what happened and you may say "no way" but whether you believe me or not it's true. I Took some clothes up there to sell today and while they were looking through them I shopped. I found so many things in my size which usually doesn't happen bc most of their things are too small that I got carried away and took like 13 or so things in the dressing room. While changing I saw a security tag on the floor and a hole in the shirt so I told Karen Mull the owner and she kicked me out. At first I asked to stay then said ok give me my clothes and I will leave ... She called the police and told them I refused to leave right after I had just said I would and they arrested me! She is a horrible owner. If I owned the name platos closet I wouldn't let her own one. She LIED to the police and I spent the night in jail for "trespassing" who does that to somebody? I was shocked and humiliated and scared out of my mind. I NEVER said that I wouldn't leave, if I knew how to get ahold of the president of the company I would tell him. She doesn't deserve to own anything while she treats people like that and lies to the police. If someone reads this that has some control over this situation something needs to be done about her. I will NEVER go back to that store, the only thing I'm guilty of is trying to help her by letting her know about the tags but oh well. Some people are just evil and she is one of them. I have a lawyer thank goodness so hopefully this can ne straightened out. I wish I could send the video that is behind the counter to the police so they could see it was her lying the whole time.

Tolerating an Oppressor! Which falls with verbally degrading abuse upon many many many others. Unreliable requisite tools such as electricity, computers, phones, HVAC, stereo systems, alarm systems, sensors, doors, store signs (in/out house), and racks for merchandise. Exploitation of staffs time from imposed working through breaks to working on days off with zero compensation and altering quality of life to be diminished. Questions to five members of management including upper & owner, you will get five different answers. Uniformality behaviors and policies are infeasible and unimaginable for the company making it a unachievable useless vision. Plato's Closet
Winmark corporation it is a franchise system, call your states attorney to report the company on the falsification and post on the BBB website (they will contact you to resolve the issue, refuse it though). Most stores have false books due to a program glitch (report to irs for hopeful audit). Some locations take donations and sometimes use those items to fill the racks at no cost. This is a judgment of your character and record get a lawyer or shop your case around, don't bother calling the owner/store.
bad judgement
i went in with a bag of newish cleaned gabardine items. 1 was Chico's and Ann Taylor last year Nancy's 6months ago and Talbot's vest and fitted jacket. they refused after an hour of waiting all of it saying it was "old". i am from retail high end and trust me this unkempt little girl was way off.the store had dirty everything and honestly my stuff was too good and i do not encourage this scam.
times are tough but my crap is not ever this bad or dirty...to want that stuff.

staff and procedure
I have tried more than once to take clothes in for resale to both stuart and nortk palm stores. This by far is the biggest waste of time you can do in a day. I had my daughter's latest clothes from aeropostle, forever21, charlotte russe etc etc. Excellent condition...only to have a moody chick with pink hair and nasty attitude decide that they did not desire these clothes for whatever stupid reason...as i looked around the store and saw clothes in worse condition and no where near as nice ...i can only assume i was not young enough nor "hip enough" for her to take my clothes...case in point, i stuck around and watched some other young and "hip"chick come in with her stuff and they took almost all her stuff...now mind you. I had my daughters clothes, not mine! This store disgusts me and I will not support nor promote anything about this scam n waste of time...
totally agree and am tired of the poor service these retailers provide...i even ironed the new never worn collared shirts and they still did not take em! the biggest joke and waste of time

Platos closet has to be one of the worst stores I have ever been in. The associates in there offer no help and are completely unprofessional. They always have a pissed off look on their face, and I always feel uncomfortable and unwelcome in there. I have been there a few times trying to sell my clothes BUT OF COURSE, they tell me that my jeans arent in style and that they are looking for certain type of jeans and shoes. Funny how the shoes and jeans I were selling were bought only 2 months ago and I couldnt return it because I dint have the recipt.
They say they only buy whats in fashion yet the things I was bringing were still being sold in the store. Not to mention their prices are joke, you can buy better clothes on the clearance rack or on sale at macys. Also the smell in the place is ridiculous. I highly doubt they even wash the clothes there, because it smells nothing but mold and feces. So to Platos closet associates who claim that customers service and honesty is their number 1 priority, all I got to say is GIVE ME A BREAK YOUR STORE SUCKS GET A REAL JOB
