We went into American Freight on May 18, 2011 and picked out several items that we wanted delivered the end of June or beginning of July. The salesperson said that wasn't a problem because one of the living room sets was still on order from the manufacturer and wouldn't be there for about 2 more weeks. We never discussed that we were doing a layaway plan and since this was our first (and last) time shopping there we didn't realize that's how this company works. I originally planned to pay for everything, but thought I shouldn't since everything wasn't in stock. I put $1000 down and the salesgirl asked when in June I'd be paying the balance, I said the 1st week. During the Memorial Day weekend my husband and I decided to cancel the order and wait on the furniture until after we get moved. We went back to the store on May 31st to cancel the order and was told we could only receive store credit for our down payment. No refunds after 10 days on layaways! I explained that we didn't do a layaway and he said if you paid some down and still owe money then that's a layaway. I told him store credit wasn't acceptable and asked for the corporate office phone. He gave me the number to the regional manager, Jessie [protected]. He said the same thing...no refunds after 10 days. My husband explained to him that we weren't told it was a layaway or we would have made sure we understood the policy. He was VERY RUDE and no help at all. Ultimately he gave us another number to someone "above him". Susan [protected] (direct number to corporate in Delaware, OH) and said that was as far as we would get. I called Susan and she was also VERY RUDE! She said they assume their consumers are smart enough to read their receipt and know the policy. I argued with her for several minutes and she told me the same thing...store credit only after 10 days. I told her she had the worst customer service of any company I'd ever dealt with and hung up on her. We returned to the store on June 4, 2011 to again request a refund. This was a different person and he said the same thing...no refunds after 10 days. When my husband explained that we weren't told we were entering a layaway plan he said, "It's on your receipt and it shows in the fine print you have 10 days for a refund." My husband told the customers in the store to check out the BBB and see the 540 complaints against this company over the last 3 years. The salesman got very upset and told us we had to leave if we were going to do that. We left and went to the Hilliard, OH store and my husband went in and found the 1 customer shopping and told them to make sure they checked out the BBB before they made a purchase.
This company is not out anything in this transaction! They didn't special order anything for us and we never took any merchandise. We simply changed our mind and want our down payment back. I've filed a complaint with the BBB and they've already sent the complaint to American Freight. We are calling the corporate office and leaving voicemails until we get some action.
This is the WORST retail experience I've ever had! DO NOT SHOP AMERICAN FREIGHT! THE SAVINGS ISN'T WORTH THE POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SCAM PRACTICES THEY HAVE!

Okay this makes no sense, I'm not sure why you're upset, if you put money down on some furniture and, not paid in full it's called being on layaway. so that's your fault for not understanding what a layaway is you have nothing to be mad about.
Exactly same thing! I don't want product, therefore I should get my money back! I will also spread the word NOT to shop at American Freight! Rip off!
I bought and paid for my dining room set on Thursday and the sales person said the order would be in on the Monday truck. So, no call on Sunday about the incoming furniture that would NOT be there on Monday. I showed up to pick up my furniture and they said the driver didn't show up to drive the truck that day. I had already paid someone to go with me to pick up the furniture. They did say that they would deliver the furniture to me on Tuesday when the truck came in. So, I called on Tuesday after 4:30 as that was the delivery time.. They had 2 guys quit and the truck wasn't unloaded yet. (Still NO Call) So, I waited until 7:30 pm to call back about my delivery... Still NO furniture to be delivered! I ask for a refund and they said it should take 3 days. Well, it's been 3 days and still NO refund!
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THESE PEOPLE!
Oh my God how I wish I would of read this before I went to the store on Savage Mn, I put money down on a sectional and my husband and I later decided not to get it . we called to get are money back and a very rude little girl refused it had been over 10 days only store credit. S o I called her store supervisor Richard Mc Neely.All i heard was company policy he refused to give the corporate office number as well as his supervisors number. After reading all the complaints I can understand why he works for them no one else would hire him. I have been in the customer service field for over 20yrs and could of gotten results from a monkey...
